We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenai Brackett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenai, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Regardless of how it happened, since a little girl I always knew that working for myself and being a business woman is what I always wanted to be and what I will continue to be. I knew I’d start a business and I had a clue of what but I never knew when. My first business I started braiding hair in high school my sophomore year but I was a shy quiet girl and I did it on the low. I wasn’t very consistent with it back in high school as much as I am now but doing hair and many other entrepreneurial things is what I dream of doing.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am currently a Braider in Houston/Cypress TX. I also own a boutique called “The Bosses Boutique”. How I got where I am today is practically trial and error, in a good way. I’ve had my inconsistent days and inconsistency get you nowhere, I’ve had my down days and I’ve had my days where everything is on track. I’ve also had days where I’ve let my feelings get in the way of business which is not something that should be done. Keep business as business and that’s one lesson I’ve learned along the ways and also as I stated just previously, consistency. Staying consistent will take you so many places.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the area I would take them to some places in downtown Houston. We would probably eat at The Turkey Leg Hut just so they can have that experience and also get drinks there. I’d take them to visit the graffiti walls downtown as well and take pictures and have fun there and then to end the week I’d take them to my grandmas house to also have some good homemade food. I think the most interesting things to check out are things you never thought you’d have interest in. I thought I’d never be interested in spiritual meanings and deeper things in life but I’m starting to pay more attention to stuff like that
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandma definitely deserves a lot of credit she pushes me and really helps me and reminds me of my potential everytime we speak. She tells me how proud she is of me and is always there when I need to talk about anything. My friends Jourdan, Jalece & Jada also remind me of my potential and how strong I am as a young woman and they all just believe in me. My parents as well.
