Meet Jennifer Anderson

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
In the mental health field, a work-life balance is critical. I help clients who have experienced significant traumas in their lives, and this can take a toll. I need to strike a balance between work life, maintaining my physical health, and family time. One of the most significant ways I create this balance is by getting out of town to create some separation between my career and my family time. My family enjoys anything outdoors, and we try to make the most of it whenever possible. While maintaining this balance can take work, it’s the only way I can truly show up for my clients.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My Private Practice offers therapy for individuals and couples. My heart is working with couples because the relationships we are in have a profound impact on our happiness. I believe we are designed to be relational, and I love being a part of creating more fulfilling relationships. I am deeply honored to witness this growth. From very early on in my internship days, I had a knack for applying humour at appropriate times during sessions. After building a strong rapport with clients, I discovered that I could be direct and honest when needed, often with a dash of humor. They definitely don’t teach that in grad school, but it works! I hear from clients that they need the truth and techniques that can actually be applied outside of the session. Our field can be passive about how to progress, and this gets frustrating to clients, especially in couples therapy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would tell my best friend that she has to experience Tex-Mex in Houston. We love going to El-Tiempo or Pappasitos. I suggest renting a beach house in Crystal Beach for part of the trip and enjoying some local bands at Margaritaville.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out to my family for their love and support, from my graduate school days through the licensing process and all the way to owning my own practice. I may have been a little extra through those times. I would also like to give credit to my awesome supervisors along the way. Both pushed me in ways that made me who I am today.
