We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Aparicio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote is “don’t wish for it, work for it”. This was on a plaque that was gifted to me years ago which I keep in my office to this day. This quote represents everything I am and what I believe in, hard work always pays off. If we are willing to put in the work, there is nothing we can’t achieve. This can be applied to business, personal relationships, wellness, education, etc.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been attracted to creativity but never considered myself a creative. It wasn’t until this summer that I decided to take a leap of faith and start decorating cakes; I figured at the very least it would be a fun hobby to have. Little did I know that I would uncover something I am truly passionate about, and pretty good if you ask me. I whole-heartedly enjoy the entire process, from gathering design ideas, meeting with clients, and of course the decorating! Although there have been bake fails and that little voice trying to tell me I am not good enough, I have pushed forward to develop my craft. Starting a cake decorating business while working full-time, being a single mom, taking college courses to finish my degree in business, and a chairman volunteer has been a huge feat , however it is the one place I can unplug and tune everything out. Being able to see what I have accomplished in just a few months makes me thrilled to see my accomplishments in the future.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston has my heart! We are such a big city but share so many things that are dear to our hearts, such as joking about the construction on 290 or the correct way to pronounce “Kuykendahl”. If my best friend was visiting our first stop would be tacos! Galveston would be a must-have with a stop at The Spot. Depending on the season we would need to see the Astros, Rockets or Texans because they’re life! Hangout spots would be Axelrad for some drinks on the hammocks or Little Woodrows for some backyard games. Lastly, I would take my best friend to some of the cool murals Houston has to offer, like ‘Greetings from Houston’ or ‘Houston I love you mucho’ because who doesn’t like a great Instagram moment!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The financial advisors and management at the firm I work for have all served as leaders and role models in my story. Throughout my years with the firm I paid close attention to everything my superiors did, how they handled complex situations and I took bits and pieces from each one to help mold me into the person I am today. Through my observations I was able to see what made them successful as well as seeing things that didn’t quite work. Being able to surround myself with successful professionals has definitely impacted my success.
