We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Cain and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking and my personal values are what inspired me to begin my private therapeutic practice. I was at a low point in my career when working for a company that disregarded work/life balance and professional ethics to make a profit. I advocated for what was professional and ethical during a crisis event. This was not accepted by that company. Due upholding ethical boundaries I was without a job and honestly questioned my worth. Depressed and hopeless I spoke with a friend that suggested that I should open my own practice. She advised that the integrity I was seeking professionally wouldn’t be found where I was seeking employment . I initially thought” I can’t do this! I don’t know how to run a business.” The following week I spoke to my husband, contacted my realtor to find an office space, asked questions, listened to podcasts, talked to business owners and took the risk that blessed my professional life. By taking that risk I am able to do what I love without organizational restrictions.
What should our readers know about your business?
Adorned Counseling bridges the gap between the stigma of mental health care and wellness. Stigma prevents progression and stems from judgment. This practice is a judgement free space for individuals to be heard and accepted while moving towards their life goals. I’ve gotten to where I am business wise by being myself authentically. When I started advertising initially I feared judgement because I don’t look like the traditional therapist. Due to that fear I chose an old photo of myself with black hair to advertise my services in efforts to appear more professional. Later I found that most clients that requested my services felt more comfortable while being unapologetically me purple hair and all. I have endured a number of professional hardships such as lack of acceptance in the professional community, physical health deficits that negatively affected performance, and financial limitations. In regards to those challenges I’ve adapted and reframed my cognitions from negative self talk by asking myself “What can I learn from this?” I also have come to accept that every challenge is not my assignment and it’s OK to say no.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to definitely shout out my husband Alonzo, my mother Mary, my kids Jeleesia and Jayla,my gym family Nicole B,Karen R, Valerie, Nora, Diana. My friends Nicole C, Donna G. Brandon B. Micaela S. Teshea B. Raleesia E. Christina S. Jami C.
