We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Mathis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, how have you been keeping yourself busy during quarantine?
This time has really allowed us to slow down, take a step back, and refocus on our priorities. We have changed our business structure at 4J Brewing Company to allow for packaged beer to go. We were not canning beer before Covid-19 so this was a change that has helped position us well during quarantine. It has been an adjustment but we definitely see the benefit in it and will continue to package beer and focus on selling beer to go when we are able to fully open back up. Additionally, since taproom hours have reduced during this time, I am somewhat working less so I have been able to pick back up some hobbies and personally enjoy spending time at home with my new husband, Garrison (married in March during quarantine).

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the co-owner of 4J Brewing Company in Houston, TX. My mom and I own the business so we are 100% female owned. I started homebrewing with my dad years ago and we decided to turn his hobby into a business. Named after me and my sisters: Jessica, Jackie, Joanna, and Jennifer, we have been open for 2 years now. We love making good beer and seeing our customers enjoy the beer and have a good time while they are at 4J. There have been a lot of challenges and learning curves along the way but thankfully I have a good team of family and friends behind me to fully support me and encourage me to never give up.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well since I spend most of my time at our brewery or at other breweries, we would probably start with drinking lots of amazing Texas Craft Beer! Then after that we would eat as much Texas BBQ and Mexican food as possible.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Simply put – I have an amazing group of family and friends. Without them, none of this would have been possible. My parents jumped on board with the idea of opening a brewery. My sisters push me to be the best I can be. My friends support and encourage me daily. My husband respects me and helps me achieve my goals of running a business. I am incredibly thankful to have each of them in my life.
