We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Miramontes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
My mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1998. During one of her many oncology meetings, I asked her if she had a “bucket list” item that I could help her fulfill. She replied, “Yes, I would like to hike in and out of the Grand Canyon”. With my approach as a fitness trainer this seemed very doable, but with the added element of cancer, something so physically strenuous can quickly become daunting. Her oncologist definitely looked at us sideways when we asked about this endeavor, but he seemed comfortable with the idea as I worked in fitness. Gulp! I set out to understand what it meant to train a person battling cancer, and to my dismay I found absolutely nothing. To deal with this, I began creating my own protocols with some input from her oncologist. As soon as I felt we had hit a groove with her fitness, I realized that we needed to focus on her nutrition, and what that even looked like for somebody fighting cancer. I worked closely with a nutritionist who quickly got to work on a plan – once again, we discovered that there were very few resources available, but we had a goal and got to work. My mom made it in and out of the Grand Canyon and lived several years past her original diagnosis, and she felt that was in large part due to the relentless work we put in. I quickly realized I had a calling – there are so many people battling cancer that are in need of a support system. In fact, assuming that the current upward trend in cancer continues, researchers conclude that people born after 1960 will have at least a one-in-two chance of getting cancer in their lifetime. I quickly realized that I am only one person, with only so many hours in a week. How do I serve all of these people who need it? From this question was born the idea of Cancer Champion Fitness. This program is the answer to the question I have been asking myself for so long.Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Cancer Champion Fitness is an online program that helps people fighting cancer, whether they are in the middle of treatment, in between rounds of chemo, post-surgery, or cancer-free. Sadly, oncologists usually have so many patients that they don’t always have the time to give the nutrition and exercise advice that patients need. Cancer Champion Fitness (CCF) does that, keeping in mind the unique needs of those battling cancer. There is simply not another program that does what CCF does, with the research, expertise, and care put into the creation of the program. As a program that is able to help people virtually, regardless of location, the possibilities for CCF are limitless. CCF has been years in the making, a slow and difficult build that, until recently, was seemingly always on the back burner. As I make a professional shift away from studio training, CCF has come fully into focus. Overcoming the obstacles along the way (such as creating a virtual business) has been made possible with support from Inspired Living and Buying Time, among others. People should know that if I can create and build an online-based business to provide solutions for a physical illness and traditionally in-person meetings (personal trainer, nutritionist, etc.), then it’s possible for them to achieve their dreams as well. Sometimes it just takes a lot of hard work.Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout out is directed at Keri Murphy and her Inspired Living team. I had the idea of creating an online program for people battling cancer, but had no idea where to begin. Not only did I get the support for creating the entire program, but every time I was ready to give up, I received emotional support, as well. This program would not exist without their team and all the time that so many people have put into the creation and implementation of the Cancer Champion Fitness program. From the website build to the filming, editing, branding, and marketing, they have been indispensable every step of the way.
