We had the good fortune of connecting with Jereme Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jereme, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Well it was a number of reason of why I wanted to start my own business. Originally wanted create my own entertainment access for artist and musicians but over the years my ideas change to where I wanted my own Design Team and firm. I’ve stuck with that since 2013 rebranding. Series Blu which is the company name originally started in 2011. The idea and name just came to me in a dream and I like how the name looked on paper. I want to be able to give artist creative freedom to express themselves and not work under the restrictions of the corporate world. It’s so many artist out there that is being limited. My ultimate goal for this is to give them quality clients and quality work that allow them to be who they are.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So as they say it’s never easy building a business and it will always be growing pains and struggle getting people to be confident in the business. The main challenge I use to have is under selling myself and doing things for very cheap lessening the value of my work. I wasn’t able to generate any profit at the beginning. There was also struggles with communication with clients and getting them what they wanted. Over time I learned from these mistakes and were able to fix and tweak how I do things to not only generate a profit but also to find a way to organize and communicate better with clients to see what they are actually looking for. Things really started to pick up for me when I started to do Comic Cons all over Texas and networking at different events. I was able to talk, learn, and improve from other artist and also selling my art. Finding out the right way to do things and better display my art and techniques and bring better value to my work. It definitely wasn’t a easy road getting to where I am. I’m still improving day by day and still growing. If I had to do it all over I’ll do it again. I have to say I’m mostly proud of being able to publish 2 children books for Barnes and Nobles that I fully illustrated. I was able to work with a good writer “Shakita Prejean” on 2 books name “My Big Dream” and “My Neighbor Mr. James” I want the world to know that with my brand we are versatile and work in every aspect of design and marketing. We do design, photography, video, and illustrations all the way up to constime designs.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So I’m a pretty chill guy so I don’t really go out too much but when I do I normally go to the Underdogs Pub on Washington to try out different craft beers and watch the Houston Rockets or if you want to do some old school arcade gaming and chill I would go to “EightyTwo” in the East Downtown area. Definitely if you’re in the mood for some dancing I’ll take you to midtown or “The Vault”. Houston is a huge city so there’s endless possibilities and things I’ve yet to still explore but I know you will like the places I go to.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely want to give credit to the most high God. My mother “Ivorlyn Brown” was a big factor in my life in her support and going through the growing pains of building a business with me. I don’t really have mentors but what I do have is many artist and designers that I looked up to as a big inspiration to not only in art but in personality and being strong. Artist like Ozzy da Vyrus, Art Germ, Iron Pinky, and Tephlon Funk have all inspired me different ways. I also like to thank Texas Kaizoku for definitely writing about me and opening so many doors for me. Definitely have to thank Stones Media as well for also being a huge factor in coaching me the proper way to run a business.
