We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeremiah Pearcey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremiah, how do you think about risk?
Firstly, I think taking risks is healthy – everything in life can be a risk and learning how to evaluate risks, as well as outcomes, is important in understanding how to healthily process risk. I’ve worked with many people that are entirely risk-averse, which leads them to avoid taking chances to better their lives, such as: pursuing education, starting their own business, leaving environments where they’re unhappy, and even seeking relationships.
I treat risk as necessary and educational. Even if I fail, there are lessons to be learned. I learn these lessons, change my methods per my new knowledge, and try again. Failure is the best teacher, but if you are afraid to take on the risk of failure, failure may be a source of shame and apprehension that leads you to stay in places and positions of unhappiness.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Cosmi mission is: to make a positive impact on the world by empowering individuals and businesses to achieve their full potential through work-life balance, mindfulness, and self-innovation. What we realize is that people are turning to doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other professionals to help them understand their bodies. While this is much needed for perspective, how are we not the experts of our own bodies?
Cosmi helps people reconnect with their body and learn how it communicates to them and how they communicate to it. This helps them relieve stress and understand why they feel the emotions they feel. Then we teach them how to control their emotions. Simplifying processes, that are often depicted in infinitely complex ways, allows each person to understand their bodies in ways that make sense to them.
This has not been easy. There is significant stigma and ignorance in society around mental health. Many do not understand what “mental health” means, others don’t believe its important, while others know its important but avoid it due to the effort required to grow. So, while everyone could benefit from understanding their mind and body better, the stigma continues to persist and detract from societal understanding of these important processes.
To combat this, we simplify. We simplify our messaging. We simplify our terminology. We simplify how we discuss our bodies. At the end of the day, if everyone can benefit, but not everyone is participating, understanding why they are not participating helps us to adapt our messaging to be more easily understood and effective.
I want the world to know there is a better path forward for mental health. We have placed people in boxes, given them drugs, and given them people to talk to and this is not enough. We have to evolve how we think about mental health, so we can stop alleviating symptoms and start targeting the actual problems in individuals’ lives.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is a massive city, sprawling 10,062 mi². There are dozens, if not hundreds, of events everyday in the city.
To really appreciate Houston, I think you really have to understand its diverse population. This requires a good jaunt around the city:
Stopping by the Common Bond Bakery in The Heights for delicious food and baked goods. Walking down to King’s Bierhaus for a cold brew and delicious German sausages. Another short walk down to the White Oak Bayou Greenway will get the adventures started with the peaceful White Oaks that overlook the bayou trail that runs along.
From there, we could see an opera performed at the Houston Grand Opera, grab a cup of coffee at Black Hole Coffee, catching a Mo Amer standup show at the Houston Improv, or seeing live music from the many talented musicians in the city. Nearby, there are places like Lake Travis to enjoy some outdoor air and beautiful sights or we could head to Austin for a day-trip to do some rock climbing.
Houston has so much to offer, so much to do, and no friend would leave this city without experiencing its rich culture and offerings!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been fortunate in that my family has supported me in all my endeavors – from serving in the US Air Force as a 19 year old, to my graduation from my PhD program.
My partner, Samantha, and my kids have been my “North Star,” helping me navigate the stress of life, while supplanting it with the joys of having a loving family.
Life has not been easy, but those around me have always been incredible factors in transforming me into the person I want and need to be.
