We had the good fortune of connecting with Jill Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jill, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always admired the success of big brand brokerages, but over time, I realized their business models often leave little room for flexibility, creativity, or personal connection. I wanted to build something different — a brokerage that values individuality, innovation, and community over corporate structure.

The idea started with a simple question: What if I could create a model that truly puts agents and clients first? Big brands often focus on volume and uniformity, but I wanted a business that emphasizes quality relationships, tailored marketing strategies, and a culture of collaboration rather than competition. Since 2008, Red Door has been one of the top producing brokerages in the North Houston areas. Also being voted a Top Workplace for 9 years in a row shows we are doing something right. Our agents value a culture of camaraderie, presence, continuing education and support.

I envisioned a brokerage where agents have more freedom — to brand themselves, to use modern tools, and to structure their business in ways that align with their goals. Instead of rigid commission splits and top-down management, I wanted a transparent, supportive environment that rewards performance and creativity.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Red Door offers the personalized attention of a boutique firm with a big impact leveraging modern technology and marketing strategies to deliver exceptional results. Transparency, honesty, and ethical practices are non-negotiable. The brokerage’s reputation is built on trust — doing what’s right for clients, even when it’s not the easiest path.

Beyond real estate, the brokerage is deeply rooted in the community. Giving back, supporting local initiatives, and building meaningful relationships which are integral to our mission.

Owning a real estate brokerage is both rewarding and humbling. It’s a journey that tests leadership, adaptability, and vision. Over time, several key lessons emerge — lessons that shape not only the business but also personal growth as a leader. The real estate industry changes constantly — from market shifts to technology trends. Staying flexible, solution oriented and open to innovation keeps the brokerage relevant. The ability to pivot quickly is often what separates thriving firms from struggling ones.

Red Door stands apart because it’s more than a business — it’s a reflection of values, vision, and heart. It’s about people, purpose, and the unwavering belief that real estate can be both professional and deeply personal.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is such a vibrant city — full of culture, food, and experiences that reflect its diversity and energy. Whether you’re into art, science, sports, or food, there’s something for everyone. Here are some of my favorite places to take visitors.

1. Space Center Houston
A must-see! It’s the official visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center. You can see real spacecraft, touch a moon rock, and even take a tram tour to Mission Control.

2. The Museum District
Home to 19 museums within a few blocks — including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Museum of Natural Science, and Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. It’s perfect for a full day of exploration.

3. Houston Zoo & Hermann Park
Located right next to the Museum District, Hermann Park is a beautiful green space with walking trails, paddle boats, and the zoo — one of the most visited in the country.

4. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
If you visit in late February or March, this is the event to experience. It’s the world’s largest rodeo, complete with concerts, carnival rides, and incredible food.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I was raised by a mother with the belief that where there’s a will, there’s a way. That mindset shaped everything about who I am — resilient, resourceful, and unwilling to accept “no” as the final answer. Challenges don’t discourage me; they motivate me to find creative solutions and push forward until I succeed.

My corporate experience taught me structure, strategy, and the importance of professionalism. I learned how to lead teams, manage complex projects, and deliver results under pressure. But beyond the business side, I’ve always been a nurturer by nature — someone who genuinely cares about people’s growth, well-being, and success.

That combination — corporate discipline and a nurturing spirit — allows me to balance results with relationships. I believe in building environments where people feel supported, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.
