We had the good fortune of connecting with Jillian Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jillian, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose to pursue an artistic career because I couldn’t see myself doing anything else other than something I actually loved to do. Before I switched my major to art the beginning of my freshman year in college, I was a pre-pharmacy major. When I was younger, I had been stuck on the idea that I would be a pharmacist and be successful and impact peoples life’s. I had prepared most of high school years to pursue a career in the medical fields. I interned at the Memorial Herman Hospital, and an Walgreens pharmacy. When I interned it was pretty nice at first. After spending my senior year interning at Walgreens pharmacy, I started to see the job for what it really was. I felt bored and uninterested in what I was doing. I went on to take my test to become a certified pharmacy technician which I failed. After I failed my test I knew I needed to do what I loved and not what I thought would determine me as being successful. Since I’ve changed my major, I been more happier in school. I’m excited to see what my future unfolds. I believe I can most definitely influence people with my artwork.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art can be described as modern. I’m still trying to figure out my art style, but right now I’m in the process of trying out a variety of different things. I started making wood cut outs and painting o them. My first wood cut out is of life sized character Sailor Mercury from the Sailor Moon anime series. I also just got into tufting custom rugs. I really would like to start doing murals inside peoples houses. What sets me apart from other artist is my diversity. Personally I’m into a lot of different things such as gaming, aesthetics, styles, designs, that influence my artistry. I would love to get into video game graphics and designing, or possibly work with Disney’s animation team. I’m willing to venture off an try new things, to help build career as an artist and my brand. I want the world to know who Jillian is and what she creates.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite spots in Houston is Truck Yard Houston. It is an restaurant/bar that features different food trucks and offers an great experience. The scenery is amazing, and it almost feel like your in a movie. They have trailers stacked on top of each other with cool designs on them and a ferries wheel. I recommend people to go at night, because that’s when the ferries wheel lights up. The food is always good, and it’s a good way to help get food trucks business out. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to take this opportunity to shout out some other great creatives that I’ve met or had encountered. These individuals include @babyfacebean, @10goldchains, @ditamontana_, @jlovesjones, @ayannasimonee, @zaireriaz, @11.07.mani, @wondersoftabi all on Instagram.
