We had the good fortune of connecting with Jocelyne Marroquin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jocelyne, what inspires you?
Movies have been such a huge inspiration for me. As a kid, I have always admired how photographers were able to capture such breathtaking scenes and tell stories through their visuals and I’ve always wanted my photos to do the same. It inspired me to get creative with colors, shadows, lighting, and so much more to create my own style in my photography.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always loved film and the vintage feel, and I think a lot of my work shows
that. The photography world is big and it
can be scary to not follow someone
elses editing skills or style but I think
that is the most exciting part. Becoming
a professional photographer was not
easy for me, I had just moved from
California to Texas and having no clients
here was terrifying to me. But building
connections everywhere I went, and
with just one person giving me the
opportunity to show my work, other
doors began to open. I think building connections is such an important and exciting way to explore endless opportunities especially if you are just starting out!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am such a big fan of coffee so having coffee first thing in the morning is a must. My favorite coffee shop in my area is called Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea, and I would love for my friends to try it too. Then we would head down to Houston, it has so many cute and fun things to do like the butterfly museum or the color factory plus the views are amazing for a quick little photoshoot. Finally, we would eat dinner at POST in Houston, this place has so many food options to choose from so I never get tired of it, it also has a rooftop to enjoy the city view, which I love!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to my first ever model, aka my sister, Jacky. She has been my biggest supporter throughout this journey as a photographer and being her little sister has been the biggest privilege. She constantly reminds me that I am capable of doing whatever I set my mind to and also pushes me to do more. She is my built-in best friend and without her I wouldn’t be where I am today. She is with me every step of this journey and as a little sister, that’s more than I could ask for.
