We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnnie Bernhard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnnie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
As a traditionally published author writing novels based on social issues, I realized from the very beginning of my career risk was enormous. When you are a creative, you feel the intrinsic need of making a statement regardless of money, fame, and acceptance. Not everyone will love or even like what you’ve created. But the belief in what you are creating, the story, the statement far exceeds the risks of rejection. If you give one hundred percent in your endeavor, regardless of the risk, doors will open. Not all of these doors will be supportive. Some may actually become a negative force. Don’t let that stop you. Instead, let it make you stronger, working harder to produce the best work you possible can. Because eventually, your work will be discovered by a majority that supports what you are doing. It will far exceed any negativity.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an award-winning, traditionally published author who writes the human story – what connects all of us regardless of geography, religion, and race. And that is the need to love and be loved.
Hard work and not giving up on my art were the essential elements that lead to four novels traditionally published. I don’t fight back when it comes to negative people. It is a waste of energy. I simply move on, lesson learned when it comes to false friends and promises.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For my best friend I would plan a weekend of great food, great wine, and great conversation.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My thanks and gratitude are to those bookstores, readers, bloggers, podcasts who supported me from the very beginning. But none of this would have happened without the support of friends and family.
