We had the good fortune of connecting with Joi Sarina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I cannot say that I had a specific thought process. I think it was just the circumstances in my life, both good and bad, that led me to diversifying myself and becoming an independent worker. I used to work reception at a pole dance studio in my late teens. By my early twenties I was a bodybuilder and a personal trainer. I returned to pole dance as a hobby eventually..and somehow I ended up stripping! My perspective of myself as a woman has changed through my personal practice of pole dance, which is why I am so passionate about instructing. I am also a sex worker, so breaking the stigma surrounding pole dance and sexuality is important to me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a pole dancer that places emphasis on erotic expression through intense, purposeful movement and extension. The technical aspect, to me, is just as important as the emotional. Every element that I include in my choreographies is meant to captivate my audience as well as impress them! I got to where I am today by investing countless hours (and lots of money) into developing my skillset and craft. I was terrible at pole when I first started. I was the slowest learner in my class. Sometimes I would finish my lessons and just cry out of frustration. But I kept practicing, kept training, and eventually my own creativity began to bloom. The biggest lesson I have learned is to never limit yourself! Always shoot for the moon. Have lofty, extravagant goals..and take baby steps. If you pick up a new hobby or skill, that you absolutely LOVE, but you are bad at it..keep practicing. Your love for what you do will one day match your technique, and you will be a force to be reckoned with. I want the world to know that I love to entertain, and most importantly, I love to dance.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am very simple. I would get a hotel in the galleria for the week. We would definitely hit the spa, get our nails done. I would get a private yoga lesson for us followed by some sushi. We would go shopping early one day, go get our makeup done, then have a night out downtown. Maybe a spontaneous drive to Galveston one night! The possibilities are endless. I just love getting dressed up and eating good food. My favorite bakery is Suzy bees, I always get dessert from there. I love window-shopping in chinatown! My current favorite sushi spot is topsushi.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a HUGE shoutout to my loving and supportive mom and dad, my beautiful and incredibly sharp big sister, and my unconditionally supportive boyfriend. I want to thank all of the inspirational women and sex workers I have met throughout my career. I also want to give a huge thank you to all of my past instructors, mentors, therapists, and trainers.
