We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Stone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joseph, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
That I solemnly cared for my art enough that at some point I had no reason to sell it; only give it away because I couldn’t bear to have it in my sight anymore. If artwork lingered – it would remain unfinished. Constructing, destroying, + recreating just to invent a unique piece caused me to start over or form a new idea from scratch many times.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
That this is all about risk. The risk is allowing time to run out. Continuously creating, learning, and failing are components of what my artwork entails. Fulfillment of incompletion is what one thrives on + the experiences it provides me with helps develop endless knowledge bringing the same satisfaction. Any quest has called for trials & tribulations whether the outcome be triumph or defeat.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a tour guide I’d show an out of town friend the area of south town San Antonio! They have beautiful local spots to grab delicious food; even for my vegan folks. To name a few Righteous Pie has amazing vegan options along with Pharm Table for individuals who prefer more organic farm to table entrees. Moving onto a trip in central downtown to Alamo Antique Mall or Cadeaux for some small gifts as souvenirs. Stop by Halcyon for some great drinks + conversation. And end the night with some gorgeous art galleries/studios in the art district – such as Blue Star Arts Complex, Southtown Art Gallery, & Hopscotch.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to make a tribute to all mentors, new acquintances, authors, + philosphers that allowed me to show the world what I’ve gained from their knowledge through my artwork. Their wisdom has guided me to higher places, the right conversations, most of my accomplishes, and unraveled problems. I’ll continue to pick the brains of these intelligent humans seeking more of what I am unaware of.
