We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Johnson-Gunter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joy, how do you think about risk?
I have taken many risks in my life: Joining the military, separating from service with a 10-month old with no plan, moving to a new city and state with no job or housing lined up, and bouncing from job to job until I was comfortable with the pay ( in Corporate America they tell you that this is frowned upon).
My outlook on risks are not necessarily bad, but I always tell myself that I just need faith as small as a mustard seed and God will take care of the rest. I personally would not be where I am today or as successful if it were not for me taking the risks, no matter how detrimental the outcome could be.
I am a firm believer that if you think bad things will happen, then they will happen. However, if you think good things will happen and you speak positivity, then good things will happen. It is all about the mindset!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an Interior Decorator located in Spring, TX. I service all of Houston and the surrounding cities and we tailor to all design styles.
JDecor is unique because we enjoy taking on the smaller budget projects. I have a series of projects called $2k and under, where I transformed spaces with $2,000 or less. I really love dealing with smaller budgets because social media perceives that you need $10-30k to make a house a home! To be honest, this has benefited my business because there are so many people that want a nice space, but simply don’t have the funds to hire a high end decorator or designer. That is where I come in and wow my clients with my magic. I work with any budget and always put my clients needs first.
I also offer a complimentary 1- hour over the phone consultation for potential clients to see if we are the perfect fit for each other.
The road to success was definitely not overnight and it took a lot of risks for me to get where I am today. As a kid, I did not have the most stable living situation. As a preteen, I experienced living in cars, shelters, and in homes with no food or electricity. I experienced evictions more times than I can count where I lost everything but the clothes on my back. My childhood was just really toxic all around. Luckily, I knew that I did not want this lifestyle forever, so it has always motivated me to do better, grind harder, and reach for the stars.
If there is nothing else taken away from this story, I would want people to know that as long as you have drive and purpose, that there is nothing that cant be accomplished!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The great thing about Houston is that there is always something to do, no matter what your into!
Since I am a skater (quad life), I would definitely suggest anyone to visit the local rinks for the adult skate nights. The energy and love is unmatched! Wednesday-Fun City 8:30-11:30pm; Thursday- Dairy Ashford Roller Rink 8:00-11:00 pm; Sundays- Skateworld Deer Park 8:30-11:30pm.
My favorite thing about Houston is the many murals around the city.. That is a must see because it is a staple to the love that Houston has for art. The museum district is a must visit as well.
The best places for food, drink, and night life would definitely be: The Houston Grub Park, Phil and Dereks, Grooves Night Club, Bring the glass-Wine Bar, and Graces. Houston is also big on Brunch so expect to eat and then party on Sundays!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my amazing husband Keith! He is so supportive in any and everything that I do and is always eager to help or find a way to help no matter what it is I am doing! Right alongside my husband, will be my beautiful daughter MJ! She is definitely mommy’s hype-girl!!!
Secondly, I would like to say that I have an amazing group of friends. (They definitely know who they are) They all deserve recognition because they all have supported me in one way or the other and I am forever grateful to have them in my life.
