We had the good fortune of connecting with Judy Abreu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Judy, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
Well, since I was younger and first went to beauty school, I always imagined that I would have my own salon. I struggled academically and knew that I would not be able to be what traditionally people would see as ‘successful’ but what I did have was a strong work ethic and resilience even at a young age 1st starting beauty school at my local Boces. It originally started out as a dream for a clothing line and owning a little boutique, and doing hair as well, but when I actually started doing hair, I worked in a few salons and started to notice negativity that I didn’t like behind the scenes and I had a strong desire to want to have a positive uplifting environment, that people come in get their hair done and leave feeling more beautiful than when they came In. And then the opportunity presented itself a few years later and that’s how Beautiful People New York was born.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think the biggest thing is having confidence and being hard-working. It’s not easy starting any sort of business. When it comes to the beauty industry, you have to always be on your toes, seeing what’s new what’s the hot thing, and doing that at the same time while trying to take care of your clients can be difficult it is definitely not easy. This is definitely an area where my faith has come into play, because I have confidence in myself and in my business, I have learned to be able to take risks when necessary whether it is learning the new trendsetting techniques or to try new product lines which can be very scary when there’s a large amount of money on the line. Properly educating yourself about what’s on the market and how it can serve you in your business and the clientele that you have is huge. Lessons that I have learned along the way as to not take things personally, or to try not to, this is business I’m the type of person that I do sometimes where my heart on my sleeve, and I genuinely love people, so that can be difficult for me, but I Am trying to learn to get better at that. I think the thing that I want people to know the most about Beautiful People New York is that when you come here you become a part of our family every time you come to get your hair done we care about what is going on in your lives, and we want you to feel good about yourself, so that beauty that’s on the inside shines on the outside. So many different people come in to my salon, struggling with different things, and you would never know it because they are shy or embarrassed, but I am so happy to say that the relationship that I have created with my clients are meaningful to me and I know special to them as well. It is so funny online a lot of trending posts that say going to the Hairsalon is like having a therapy appointment and it is so true for both of us sometimes.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow this is so tough! Being in NY is such an amazing experience because you can truly find restaurants from every culture and there is always something fun going on. This past week my husband and I enjoyed a beautiful concert by Candlelight they have an amazing selection of music played by a string quartet for the one we went too and tried out an amazing Peruvian restaurant on the upper east side called mission ceviche (I’m part Peruvian so I couldn’t resist!) Another great place in manhattan is Laudrée you truly feel like you are transported to France when you step into those doors. Another thing I like to do when I have some down time is take a trip out to NJ to Sojo Spa such a relaxing experience especially since I am standing up all day using my arms it’s so nice to go into the pool and sauna get a massage – then we often go to a favorite restaurant seriously my husbands favorite place Houston’s it’s a steak house, delicious never disappoints. Those are definitely some of my go tos but truly I would love to take my bestie shopping at the Roosevelt Feild mall take a break in the bloomys cafe or maybe a slice of pizza I love King Umbertos and then come home turn the tv watch a favorite movie or some Netflix and then order some Chinese food because of course you can not come to Ny and not get Chinese. Lastly I would treat her to the best bagels on LI from Bagel Boss a good coffee and drive her to the airport with tons of rainbow cookies from our fave Italian Bakery here on LI The Sweet Life Bake Shop. That’s everything on the NY visit list!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have to start out with God, the ultimate shout out lol I am a Christian and have a strong relationship with Christ and I know there is no way I would be here with out that. Having my faith to fall back on has always kept me and continues to keep me strong and confident in my future. I know that I am blessed and in that have the ability to bless those who come across my chair showing them kindness and compassion. And secondly for sure my husband Jorge. He’s not only the best husband but my business partner, while I’m hands on with the clients, he helps manage our team on the floor, day-to-day activities, payroll so many other things I can’t even list them In, but if I didn’t have him working with me, my salon wouldn’t be open today.
