We had the good fortune of connecting with Juliana Ewer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juliana, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Sometimes things are planned, and starting my business wasn’t one of them.
My interior design business was actually born from our personal home being damaged from a tornado associated with Hurricane Harvey. This hurricane had tornadoes associated with it, and unfortunately one of the several in our neighborhood came down our street.
We (as well as many neighbors) began the repair of our homes, and my husband and I decided to repair and sell. In that process we had hired home stagers to furnish the property and were not happy with the result.
I decided to purchase furniture, art and accessories and stage it myself. In that process, a neighbor called me and asked who staged my home…and my business started.
It quickly grew to several homes staged, and within the first couple of months I had an interior design request to furnish a home, then another and another.
I had some of the staged homes buyers ask us to design the homes they purchased. The business quickly grew and 6 years later the business is 95% interior design, but I also still offer luxury home staging. I have a Staging Manager that coordinates and installs properties for realtors and homeowners.
I have won 7 Interior Design Society “Designer of the Year” (DOTY) National Awards. I have been a featured speaker and panelist at design showrooms and on design podcasts.
I am the current Vice President of the Houston Chapter of the Interior Design Society (IDS), serve on a National IDS Committee, have been a Style Eye for Dallas market and a Design Influencer for High Point Market, and for KBIS (Kitchen & Bath Industry Show) in Las Vegas.
I have my design studio located in Missouri City, Texas and I am so grateful for all the clients who trusted me to bring their vision for their home to life. I am also grateful for all the people who supported me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love being an interior designer, and I think the most rewarding part of this process is seeing a project come to a conclusion, and seeing the client in the gorgeous space they had always dreamed was possible.
Interior design is LOTS of behind the scenes…but seeing clients on Reveal Day and is why I love what I do.
The process involves lots of planning, meetings, research, procurement, etc that you don’t see on TV shows and much of it is not seen by clients…but when all the work is done and the installation is complete…seeing happy tears in the eyes of your client makes the months of work so worth it!
I think my process sets my brand and business apart. My clients love that while I am a creative, the administrative part of this business is what keeps a client informed of what is happening, what is next and eliminates surprises related to pricing and timeline of a project.
We implement and follow processes from project start to project finish. Open communication between clients, designer and contractor should be seamless so everyone involved in a project is on the same page at all times.
We have a white glove, turnkey design and installation process that offers our clients a truly tailored, client -centric experience.
Once selection are made, we do the work and allow our clients to focus on their priorities.
Good communication, upfront pricing, and realistic timelines are essential for a smooth design experience.
The majority of my business is referral or repeat clients and this is a huge compliment from my clients that I cherish.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston has so much to offer….but I think not to miss places would include historic homes, botanical gardens..thats something I enjoy.
I probably have them visit during the Houston Rodeo. I have been a rodeo volunteer for 10 years on the Western Art Committee. We have taken friends from all over the country and from Europe for their “first rodeo” experience. It is something not to miss!! So fun for a first time visitor to Houston!
I think they would need to spend a little shopping at the Galleria, have a massage at The Houstonian, and have meals at Brennans, Killens BBQ, and a hidden gem in Missouri City Brandani’s restaurant.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out the Interior Design Society (IDS) professional organization for helping guide me in my journey into the Interior Design business. They embraced me and I took advantage of every educational conference, and local chapter meeting to immerse myself into learning best practices and processes of a successful design business.
I want to shout out my husband, Ron Ewer, for supporting me and encouraging me to jump in with both feet! I had spent about 20 years raising our 2 sons, and supporting my husband as he built an incredibly successful business of his own. I would never have had the courage to start my business without his guidance and support.
