We had the good fortune of connecting with Kanosky Munoz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kanosky, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Lockdown happened RIGHT after my birthday (March 13th). I thought, “Time to relax and enjoy some quality time at home with husband” and then, 3 weeks into the lockdown, I felt useless, sad, un-inspired and I went down this rabbit hole of questions, main one was, “I’m this age and what have I done with my life?” At the time, pre-pandemic, I was with another dance company under the direction of someone else and felt like it was time to move on and start my own dance company. I felt that the right time, in my heart, was to follow my own gut and start this business that I have always dreamed of. A student mentioned her family starting a music and dance studio and that I could join them by rent a space, that was the last piece of the puzzle. Garza studios’ help have been essential for my business. What I didn’t consider was, “Wait a minute, there’s a pandemic happening, how are my students going to be able to be in the same room, 6-feet apart, dancing to fast beat music AND wearing a mask?” Thankfully, I have amazing friends and students that have always believed in me and they came under the CDC and studio’s guidelines.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Our mission at KDENCE is to provide students of all levels with more than just dance classes, but a unique experience in which the student can grow both mentally and physically as a dancer. Some of these lessons can also be apply in the every day life. teamwork, structure, confidence; an a spoken language that few know how. What excite us is to built a community through latin dance and creating a bond between people from other cultures, ages, beliefs.
Being a woman in this business has always been a challenge. So many stigmas around “a woman can’t teach me how to lead another woman, they’re not strong”, “I need a male-leader”, or “She’s not pretty enough”. Female dancers have always been under a magnifying glass on their looks, how they speak, how we behave, what they wear. If the roles were reverse to a male dancer, then he’s a great leader. I’ve learned through my hard-work, detailed oriented style of teaching and my connection to the students, is what sets me apart, so I just let my work speak for itself. My legacy is my work, so I do it to 100%. of my ability. Unapologetic!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
“Hi Friend, I have the weekend plan out” Thursday Night, we can start the night at Avant Garden to listen to live music by this trio called “Trio Forté”. Best latin trio out there, then let’s go to Sambuca.
Friday night: We can pre-game at Cantina Barba, they have the best quesadilla and burgers AND Palomas in town. Follow by a night of dancing at Tropicana.
Saturday morning is time for some breakfast, let’s go to Harry’s.
Sunday, we can enjoy a drag show at Boheme. You’ll love it. Full of energy from the best drag artist in town.
See you next time you come. 🙂
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
