We had the good fortune of connecting with Kare Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kare, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The coaching industry is one that will push you past your limits, humble the crap out of you, be exciting, scary, and awesome all at the same time, and there is no limit where you can take your coaching business. Know of those bouncy castle houses? And jungle gyms? And also a jungle? That’s what the coaching industry is, a mix of all of that and then some. You will learn so much about yourself, the world, what you do as a coach and so much more. You will meet people with different perspectives you’ve never considered, and you will have so many beautiful connections. It is such a rewarding and fulling industry, but it’s not for people who are not okay with working.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is Magnetic Unicorn Coaching Services. I am a manifestation and mindset mentor and I started this business because I had experienced a lot of hardships in my life and learned so many lessons from them, and about getting what I want, and I wanted to guide people to also do the same.

Before officially starting my business, my proudest moment was when I learned how to network better at networking events, made a post to offer to share my lessons on a Facebook group, and came back to my post having over 600+ likes and over 200 comments of people being interested in attending my webinars. I started running my webinars for a few weeks and had about 10 people join at most at one time. It was really amazing!

After my business officially took off, I made some new goals and intentions for myself. That’s what’s really different about me, I let myself dream big and I manifest it (not always but I’m getting there!). I manifested getting to speak for a big Facebook group in the Asian community, 3 years after I set the intention. I remember seeing all these people speaking for them, and thought, “I want to do that too.” I LOVE speaking and being on stage. After 3 years, someone in their team reached out to me to speak at their online webinar to entrepreneurs looking to learn more about manifesting for their business. I was soooo happy to speak! And I thought to myself, if I can manifest this, I can manifest ANYTHING I want!

I then manifested several opportunities to speak on podcasts, for online workshops, and coached over 20 clients in the last 1.5 years in my business.

It wasn’t an easy start for me because I didn’t know what to do to get my business going. I just did what I was passionate about (guiding others), I studied manifestation principles and techniques, and I hired and worked with ALOT of business coaches and even manifested some! It was really hard too since my finances weren’t so great and I was racking up a lot of debt.

Things got a bit easier after, though. I learned to ask for financial help from many different sources, I also started learning about wealth confidence, and I got myself into supportive and empowering communities. It’s so important to get yourself into your crowd – one that uplifts you, and supports you! I also got a lot of mental health support. There’s so many free resources out there so I am so glad I was able to use them to get to where I am today.

One lesson I learned was that sometimes it’s okay to take what you can get, but you want to make sure that you’re not just settling for it, and that it’s something you ENJOY. And I learned that it’s okay to change my niche, have multiple offers, and do whatever I need to do that feels good in my business, it actually becomes a lot easier to figure out what you want to do in the long-term, if you decide to only do one thing. It’s also okay to say no to what really doesn’t light you up in your business, there was one year where I would kept saying yes to networking opportunities, but although they were with really sweet people, the opportunities were not ones that felt right or really move my business forward with the right people. It’s very important to be mindful of your time and energy, and also find your blue ocean – which is where your ideal opportunities are. Not every invitation should be said yes to, practicing discernment is key for me!

I’d love for people to know that Magnetic Unicorn is about being magnetic to your desires, just as the unicorn you are. So many people think we have to become someone else, but really, we just have to be comfortable with being our authentic selves, and our best self and keep working towards that, and that is what makes you magnetic to what you desire. This is how you live a life on your own terms, this is how we make the impossible, possible.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve actually had to do this before for several people who came to visit me. I actually don’t go out that much for a best time in my city (best time is honestly resting for me lol), BUT I used to be a corporate concierge in the tourism/hospitality industry, so let me share what that version of me would say, and where I took my friends 🙂

Stay at a bougie and comforting hotel like the Alt Hotel. It’s contemporary, fun, has cool lights in the room, really friendly hotel concierges, and a really nice bath tub for a good soak! They also are connected to a nice sushi restaurant too that I heard was really good and has an omakase!

Head over to Cinnamon for some delicious and huge plates of Indian food. It’s a bit on the pricier side, but soo worth, we had to take home leftovers when I was with my friend.

Check out the Calgary Tower for amazing views of the city. I had never been before even though I was born here, but I heard it was really awesome, and this is probably one of the only times I would be excited to go out with a best friend who’s visiting lol! There’s also Sky 360 where we could eat and enjoy the views from above!

Obviously, you have to come during the Calgary Stampede, a 10-day festival full of delicious and wacky food experiments from various vendors, mini donuts, the dream house, rides, and the Western Oasis. I love looking at all the art pieces and having conversations with the artists and also vendors at the BMO Centre.

One thing I’ve also been doing a lot lately is checking out the markets around town. I’d want my best friend to come to the Woman’s Show with me, I went once last year, and would go to many now, it was super fun, and you get lots of goodies in your goody bag for a fraction of the door price!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, there’s so many people, support and books that I would love to recognize!

In general, I want to thank those who believed in me and what I wanted to do (I’ve always had many ideas for building businesses), even when I had no confidence to move forward and kept making excuses.

I want to also thank some of my leads at my last full time role, for encouraging me and pushing me a bit further than my ego could handle.

My friends and family for sharing with me what abundance really looks like, for their financial, emotional and physical support, and reminders to have a lot more fun, which helped me strive to be better especially during times where I was just at an all time low.

And I also want to thank my psychologist, therapist, counsellors and AI, I am such an emotional person and I really appreciate you all helping me process my emotions and thoughts as I move through my journey. Investing in my mental health is so important and it helps me be a better person to myself, those I love and also to my business.

There are two books that really helped me break through in coaching and also my business:

The Code Of The Extraordinary Mind by Vishen Lakhiani – This book woke up my non-conformist identity and made me realize that I don’t have to follow the BS rules and I can really manifest a life on my own terms. I remember reading this book so often, in the nail salon while waiting for a friend to get her nails done, in the pizza parlour while waiting for my pizza… it was so enlightening!

Chillpreneur: The New Rules for Creating Success, Freedom, and Abundance on Your Terms
by Denise Duffield-Thomas – When I was finally ready to start charging money and move forward with my coaching business, this was the best book that I’ve read/still refer to to help me kickstart my journey. It gave me the confidence to own what being a wealthy and successful woman looks like, despite what I see on social media or in the coaching industry, and to own my shit no matter what anyone says!

I also want to dedicate this shoutout to Toni Liu, who nominated me for this shoutout. Thank you for being such a wonderful friend and for this shoutout, I appreciate your support and our lovely deep conversations, you always make me feel so seen and loved <3

And also to my soul dog companion, Tofu. I appreciated our fuzzy cuddle time together, I know you’re watching over me and telling me to live life fully and happily <3
