Meet Karen Kowenski PT DPT WCS | Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist, Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Women’s Health

We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Kowenski PT DPT WCS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karen, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
HA! I picked this question because this was the one I laughed/ smirked at! As a mom of 2 little girls ( 3 and 5), working, wifing, daughtering etc- the word balance has changed overtime. I used to envision ‘balance’ as a perfect static equilibrium. Now, I sit it as a bunch of balls being thrown into the air- some are made of plastic that I allow to fall and break and its no big deal, others are made of glass and I must keep them going . . . The goal of working towards balance: work/ life, health/happiness, etc is an allusion- all we can do is do the best we can- some days we will excel at one thing at the cost of another- and that is OKAY.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have been a pelvic floor physical therapist for twelve years, over the years I have continued to learn and hone my craft. I always say pelvic floor physical therapy is half science, half art, half figuring out how to connect with the client. I think the third thing is really what sets me apart. At the beginning of every session I ask what went well and what didn’t go well since last visit and why. Together we brainstorm on solutions. Also it is super important that the goals we (client and I) set fit into his or her lifestyle. Some people want to be able to run without leaking on themselves, others just want to sit pain free. The pelvic floor is personal- we talk about bowel, bladder, and sexual health- so whatever is important to them is important to me. There is no right nor wrong
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is an eating city- I would eat my way through! First stop is Chinatown: definitely Mein or Banana Leaf then get a foot massage and enjoy your food coma! ;). Other great places are Hermann Park, the Houston Zoo, and Botanical Gardens. Sunday morning brunch at Carocal is the way to go!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could not have built up my business to what it is today without ‘the grandparents,’ as in my parents and my in laws. Who would help with the kids? who would be the back up? Honestly, I definitely would have given up in the beginning of the pandemic. 10,000%, The grandparents, as we call them, stepped in when they really didn’t want to and babysat, cooked, cleaned, and did pick up and drop off. They freed up my time so I could help the men and women I treat and allowed me to network and build my name in the community!
