We had the good fortune of connecting with Karena Peters and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karena, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised right here in Houston, TX. My parents divorced when I was ten, leaving my Mother to raise two young girls on her own. It wasn’t the easiest and the struggles were definitely real. I would watch my Mom work her butt off day after day to take care of us, making sure we were good, sometimes leaving herself without. Growing up I was taught responsibility early on. Once my sister and I were old enough, we had to do our part to pitch in. At the ages of 15 and 16 years old, we had our first jobs, working to help Mom out.

Starting work at age 16, being taught how to pay a bill and balance a checkbook (because they had those back then), on top of making sure the house was clean before she got home, really impacted who I am today. It made me have to become this disciplined and responsible kid, teaching me that work had to be done first before you can go and have fun. Now as an adult, I still apply some of those same concepts to my life. I am very particular about making sure I handle my responsibilities, especially now being a mother before I go “have fun.” Or being disciplined when it comes to making sure I get my workouts in before other misc. things. And although I have moments where I look back thinking to myself, “I wish I could’ve done more of this and that” as a kid, I am still grateful for those strict and responsible concepts because I know I will always handle business first before anything else.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career as a Fitness professional is still a work in progress. I have been certified since 2018 and at first, I simply wanted the certification for educational purposes, just to further my knowledge in the fitness game. But now, I am really putting forth effort on creating my own career as a fitness professional.

A little background, when I became certified, I was working a 9-5 job and struggling to find time to train on the side along with making sure I had time to train myself. It didn’t work out too well and I put training others to the side for a while. Fast forward to the beginning of 2020, I was one of the people who lost their job to the pandemic, while being pregnant and I wasn’t sure what the future held. Fast forward again to 2021, I’m now balancing being a new Mama, while trying to get back into the groove of working out but now I want to make more out of it.

There have certainly been ups and downs the past few years really trying to find the strength and the courage to create your own career. It’s not easy but I’m working on ways to give my love and passion to help others. I’ve learned that there will be bumps, that some things won’t always work out as you planned but you gotta keep trying. I want my fitness brand to be about making sure people are in their healthiest and best shape. I truly want everyone to be at their healthiest.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I honestly don’t get out a whole lot, BUT if I had to suggest some nice places to check out:

The Museum District (because I’m also a nerdy girl)
Yard House (City Centre as a whole is nice)
The Locker Room (Great bar)
The Galleria Mall
The Woodlands (To eat & drink, I just love the scenic views out there)
Williams Tower Waterwall
Bowlmor or Bowlero (I’m not the best bowler but I love going!)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to thank God, nothing in this life is possible without him. I also love and appreciate my Mother for all that she has done and still doing. But one of my biggest shoutouts is to my husband. He’s been my biggest supporter through every struggle I’ve seen as an adult. He is also the reason I even became interested in fitness at all. When I was ready to lose weight and start training, he taught me all the basics in the gym and then from there I just went after it. He keeps me uplifted and inspired and encourages me to always believe in myself and my dreams. So thank you hubby for everything. And thank you to all my friends and family for the continued support!
