We had the good fortune of connecting with Karess Linzer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karess, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When it comes to ministry, I have always been very adamant about sharing the truth, love, and grace of Christ. I began my own ministry when I graduated from college and it was a rough start, just like many would assume. From creating engaging content and curriculum to teaching and mentoring women from all walks of life in downtown Houston, my driving force was never about myself. It has been and will always be Jesus Christ and His will for my life. My thought process continues to grow and shift while still being rooted in the cause of my ministry which is to see others whole – by the grace of God, healed – by the love of God, and full lives – by the freedom found in God.
I started out dancing in my local church then, with a local competitive dance team and I danced throughout high school. I was diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 12 but I refused to stop dancing. I have always believed in the power of movement and I have always loved dancing. Fast forward to my college years, I graduated from Stephen F. Austin University and I majored in Dance, Education, and minored in Spanish. I eventually signed with an agency in Los Angeles and Atlanta where I traveled as a contemporary, jazz, and hip-hop dancer and choreographer for about five years. I then began a career as a Dance Director in Houston, Texas. I directed Dance Companies and Dance Teams for eight years before I ended my Dance Director career at the age of 29.
While I was directing dance, I also worked as a Life-Coach for about two years. This is something that I knew I loved and wanted to pursue in my future. So now, I lead multiple ministries and have the opportunity to pour into different women from all walks of life. Now, as a published Author and content/curriculum creator, I get a chance to focus full-time on creating resources that serve as tools and strategies for young adults and women that I come across.
I have always been a believer in Christ for as long as I can remember. However, it wasn’t until I turned 21 that I actually formed a RELATIONSHIP with Jesus. I began to learn more about His character and I learned more about grace. This heightened my belief in Lord and Savior Jesus and it also ignited a fire in me to share the gospel and goodness of Jesus to everyday women just like those of you reading this.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Published Author of a book titled, “Time to Fight, Sis” as well as a Christian Content & Curriculum Creator. My book, “Time to Fight, Sis” is full of tools and strategies to help women walk through the common seasons of life with practical ways to apply them biblically. I have coined it as “The best friend’s guide to a life of authenticity and wholeness” I want to make other women know, they are NOT alone.
If it ever seems like you’re being overwhelmed by your emotions and you don’t know how to work through them, or you feel like you’re just reading books, Instagram posts, and other motivational stuff, but you still have NO clue how to APPLY the things you’re reading… Time to Fight, Sis is the perfect book for you! This is exactly what sets me apart from other authors and books that are already available.
Rooted in faith and jam-packed with tools and strategies to immediately apply as you read, this book is the best friend’s guide to a life of authenticity and wholeness!
– We walk through obstacles such as anxiety, depression, fear, lies, procrastination and many more.
– We plow through tough emotions and realities that require you to be diligent, intentional, and honest with yourself.
– We learn new tools and strategies with BIBLICAL references and personal experiences.
– We tackle your emotions and BREAK-UP with lies!
Overall, if you need something that helps you become intentional about walking fully in who God has created you to be without your emotions taking control, Time to Fight, Sis is for you!
Outside of that, all of my additional work in ministry consists of writing, teaching a community of women, and Christian content creation (i.e. books, devotionals, blogs, and other resources). I’m most proud and excited about the new season that I’m facing in my life and the way my content is shifting and diving deeper so that others are encouraged and motivated to fully step into everything Christ has for them. The journey is never easy, otherwise, everyone would not only do it but do it effectively. I believe we define what success is and what it looks like. Success to me will not look the same as someone else’s success. Maybe someone defines success by the amount of money they are able to earn. Whereas, I define success as seeing others who engage with my content and become motivated and inspired to get to know Jesus deeper and become healed, whole, and changed from the inside out through Him.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is full of activities to be enjoyed by anyone and everyone no matter what they like. If you’re an outdoorsy person, you’d love the Arboretum, each of the local parks in the area, and outdoor theatres with live music and performances outdoors like Miller Outdoor Theater. Restaurants are plenty in this area and in surrounding areas. However, I’d recommend Spindletop in downtown Houston where you sit and enjoy a nice dinner overlooking the best parts of the city while the restaurant slowly spins or Taste of Texas with great steak and a stellar crab cake. Another hidden treasure is Whiskey Cake, it’s a farm-to-table restaurant and that should just about tell you great it is! If you just want to enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, or wine I’d suggest visiting my good friends at Cafeza, you can even enjoy live music here as well. My husband, Tavarious, and I have visited each of these many times and I’m looking forward to going again.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It definitely takes having a lot of support to truly walk through all of life’s valleys. Especially with starting anything from a ministry to a business. My support system throughout the years has been full of family, friends, and lots of mentors along the way. They have helped me understand how to do things better and they’ve encouraged me to keep going even when I wanted to give up. If there’s one thing I would encourage others to do is to get around people who love you and will also call you out when you’re wrong and will call you to rise above your own limitations. Each person in my supportive circle played a huge part in all of my endeavors from women’s ministry events to writing a book and creating content for the community of women I serve, They’ve definitely been an intentional driving force in the things I do. My husband, Tavarious Linzer, has been a huge support in my ministry endeavors over the years and he constantly challenges me to approach things from a new perspective.
