We had the good fortune of connecting with Karess The Stylist of Kanvas Hair Bar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karess The Stylist of Kanvas Hair Bar, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success / the success of my brand is absolutely A-1 customer service. Creating great service for all of my clients includes; creating an environment for them to relax and feel nothing but good vibes while they’re being taken care of, making sure they are hydrated by offering water, snacks, etc., by making them as comfortable as possible, and them not only being considerate of my time, but me being considerate of their time as well. On top of all of these factors i must add in, being able to deliver the look they are trying to achieve on a consistent basis. When people look good, they feel good. To be able to make someone feel good about themselves, makes me feel great to know that i can put a smile on someones face.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What i feel sets me apart from others is the ability to connect with my clients on a more personal level. I like to be myself and just keep it real with them. I find that this helps them to do the same with me. I also feel when i go above and beyond for my people, it creates a comfortable place for them to want to come back to.

As a business owner, I’m most proud of all the growth I’ve journeyed through over the years. I’ve learned so much in such a short period of time. I’m also CRAZY proud and SUPER excited to launch my very own product line in the next coming weeks.

I have sacrificed sooooo many things to get where i am today, business-wise. One of those sacrifices included taking a plunge and changing locations from inner city Houston to the suburbs of Houston. I knew for sure that i may have had to lose clientele because of this decision. All in All, I gained even more clients than before and my books have been filled 1-2 months out since then. Crazy right?! I believe a lot of what holds us back in life is fear. When we learn to stop doubting ourselves because of fear, and just trusting what our gut is telling us, we can actually conquer WAY more than we set our minds to.

Running a business for 7 years has not been easy, but it hasn’t been extremely difficult either. Their have been a few teachable moments and many many changes over the course of time as far as scheduling, prices, policy, and work/ life balance, but nothing too crazy.

The number one lesson I’ve learned along the way are (as cliche` as it sounds) to work smarter and not harder. Standing up everyday for 8-12 hours (sometimes more) takes a lot out of a person once you think about it. There will always be money to be made, but you don’t get time back. Its important to take time for yourself and to also protect your energy at all costs. I have really grasped the meaning of self care and the meaning of it more recently than before. Getting a massage, taking a trip every couple of months, or just sitting down to enjoy some coffee while reading a good book is very very essential to me in order for me to keep going with my career. Unplugging is very necessary as often as its needed. Without doing so, I’m unable to perform my best and unable to deliver 100 percent, which is unfair to the client.

What I want the world to know about my brand and my story is that you can literally do anything you want by staying consistent and treating people with kindness. Fill yourself with knowledge, practice at something you want to get better at, and most importantly, KEEP GOING!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok! So I’m a bit classy, a little bougie, and one HECK of a foodie. If my best friend came to visit, we’re for sure hitting up these places in Houston.
