We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I started my business in 2009 I didn’t really know how much it was going to grow. I knew that I loved photography and thought if I could make a little extra money while still working my day job it would be great. Looking back starting my business was the best thing I ever did. I have been a full time photographer since 2016 and I love that I get to wake up everyday and do something that makes me happy and doesn’t feel like a job.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have developed a unique newborn style over the last few years that is very light and bright. I shoot in an all white studio and usually keep most of my sets on the lighter side. My overall style for most of my shoots is super airy and bright with desaturated colors. It definitely hasn’t always been easy booking clients, but I have had some pretty amazing clients over the years that religiously recommend me to friends and family and that has helped grow the business tremendously!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh gosh where to start. There are so many fun, amazing, things to do in Houston. You definitely would have to check out the amazing Houston Zoo, get some really good Mexican food, go to an Astros game. And that’s just the first few days!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost my hubby, Matt, has been my biggest supporter and rock. Through the ups and downs of owning my own business he’s been there through it all. Also my whole family, they’ve been my amazing cheerleaders over the years and have been there countless times to help bounce ideas off of, tell me I’m crazy (or not), and really lift my spirits when I’ve been too hard on myself. All of our parents have been absolutely amazing the past 3 years since my sweet boys came along and have given countless hours taking care of them (so we didn’t have to put them in daycare). Matt, William, And Shepherd thank you for always being my inspiration and light! Julie and Dad, Mom and Charles, Gay and David, Emily, Katie, Kat, and Joanie; thank you all for everything you do for us.
