We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathryn Scurry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kathryn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a queer woman of color, I saw that the Minority, Hispanic and Asian LGBTQ community members had limited forms of quality media that highlight their talents and achievements. I am a woman with many talents ranging from music to film and television and wanted to contribute a positive platform that would provide an inclusive space to do so.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pride Entertainment is an LGBTQ entertainment company that specializes in all things LGBTQ whether in business, social, entertainment, news, or events. Pride Entertainment Magazine, a parent company under Pride Entertainment was created to connect, inform, entertain, and inspire LGBTQ community members worldwide. It was launched in September 2021 and is currently in its 5th issue.

Starting Pride Entertainment Magazine was no easy task since I already had a lot on my plate. So I put a few other talents on hold to focus. With no knowledge of starting a magazine publication and no financial support, I just used the skills that I naturally acquire and started researching how to and used Canva, a graphic design platform to start. And after rebranding twice, I finally got it all together and made it work. The first challenge is that I am a one woman show learning as I go and it can be overwhelming at times when there is so much to do with little time. However, I managed and pushed forward and now it is moving along just fine. The second challenge I currently face is finding a like-minded team with the same drive, passion, and vision. I am currently working towards building this team through various business and social outlets. And last but not least growing Pride Entertainment Magazine’s audience in which I have enlisted the help of BG Promotions, a marketing agency in Georgia with a unique network of local and global resources to develop cohesive brand strategies and visual messages so that I may focus on the back end on a bigger project that I am working on called Pride Connect – The first Business, Social, Entertainment and Publication platform designed to serve the LGBTQ community, supporters and allies.

One valuable lesson I’ve learned from starting any business is to “crawl before you walk” meaning it’s okay to start small and work your way up. I admit that sometimes my passion and drive can get ahead of me and I have to play catch up but I love the chase. I love waking up knowing that what Pride Entertainment Magazine offers gives LGBTQ community members an additional media outlet to showcase their talents and achievements.

Pride Entertainment Magazine is not just a monthly online digital publication. It is a blueprint for those who seek recognition for the talents they possess and hard work they contribute to society. One unique thing about Pride Entertainment Magazine is it has a special interest in minority and underrepresented LGBTQ community members who often feel disadvantaged or disregarded. And though we are LGBTQ community-driven, we welcome everyone.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite place would be anywhere in the Montrose area. As a New Yorker born and raised, the Montrose area takes me back to “The Village”- West 4th street and an LGBTQ hotspot in NYC with clubs, restaurants, shopping, and a pier with a view to die for.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Greater Houston Chamber of Commerce, NGLCC,(National LGBT Chamber of Commerce) and WBEA (Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance) has been great assets to Pride Entertainment and Pride Entertainment Magzine providing valuable resources that continue to aid in the growth and success.
