We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Carpenter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katrina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always wanted to have my own business even as a teenager I wanted to design clothing but never really knew where to start. I worked for a major insurance company for 12 years and was laid off due to downsizing. After the shock and fear wore off I decided I didn’t want to work doing just some job I didn’t absolutely love. I was told that I could use money from my 401K to start or purchase a business. I decided to finally take this opportunity to work for myself. I scoured the Internet trying to decide what kind of business to start and finally decided I wanted something family friendly with a lot of room for growth. So in 2020 I purchased my first company BlueSky Moonwalks just one month before COVID hit. That first year was terrifying and stressful and not profitable. By year two, things had dramatically improved and I decided I wanted to pursue anything and everything that I was interested in. I’ve always wanted to have a space that people could rent for private parties like baby showers, weddings and everything in between. I wanted to expand the great reputation of BlueSky Moonwalks into and indoor rental space where folks could rent a bounce house and the space for a kids party, thus BlueSky Events Studio was born.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
BlueSky is unique because we are multilayered. Not only do we service individuals with our bouncy house rental business but we also service companies, schools and daycares. We have a lot of long term customers who love us and come back again and again. I hope that the great reputation of my first business BlueSky Moonwalks will build confidence in my ability to service clients in a brick and mortar venue like BlueSky Events Studio. With the event space I am most proud of the happy customers who found us to be easy to work with, a unique intimate space that was affordable. I’m really excited for the new program we are launching in January a membership service that provides amazing incentives for our repeat customers, our schools, daycares and community members and industry vendors. We will be working to offer more sponsored events that will help foster a sense of community and togetherness. I’ve learned that everyone won’t see your vision, everyone won’t be supportive or responsive but you have to keep trying until you find your people. I want people to know that win or lose, I tried to chase my dreams and you can to.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Perry’s Steakhouse Torych’s Tacos
The Breakfast Klub
iFly
Axe throwing at the Ratchet Hatchet
Downtown Aquarium
Houston Zoo
Mercer Botanical Gardens
Galveston

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends have been a big part of my journey. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to do a fraction of the things I’ve done without them. I have to say thank you to my sister Fallon who has helped me with organizing and executing my ideas. Thank you to my best friend Amanda who seriously thinks I am insane but tries to calm my crazy and give me great suggestions. Thank you to my brother Donald who I have drug into manual labor against his will but has had my back time after time. Special shoutout to my friend Yasin who has put blood, sweat, time and energy into both BlueSky Moonwalks and BlueSky Events Studio I may not have taken the first leap if he hadn’t said he’d have my back, I do appreciate you and things you have done for BlueSky.
