We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katrina, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
This is a interesting topic. I was born in Sealy, Texas. I stayed in Brookshire, Texas until the age of 3 then move to Houston, Texas in Acres Homes which is known as the 44. I went to Brookshire, Texas and spent almost every summer there at my grandmother’s house. I had family there and some friends I had made over the summers I spent there.

We did not have much, however, it taught me about life struggles and how to survive from what we had. Even though we didn’t have much, we still smiled.

So this is how my schools went. (lol) I attended Inwood Elementary from kindergarten to 4th grade, Dean Jr. High in 5th grade, Hoffman Middle School in 6 to 7th grade (they still have one-way hallways till this day) , Klein Intermediate in 7th-8th grade, Klein Forest High School 9th grade, Mayde Creek High School 9th-10th grade, Eisenhower (Big Ike) 10th grade and then we moved back to Brookshire, Texas where I finished my high school years at Royal High School.

Let’s just say life happens. As you can see we moved quite a bit! My mom struggled and I was the only child. But she always made sure I had my own room wherever we stayed. We were homeless at a short time in my young life. So my mom started working two jobs.

My upbringing taught me to always be humble, pray daily to God, not to judge or look down on anyone because you never know their circumstances. Even though you may not have as much as you want, you have each other. And if you are able to help someone in need, to do just that. It made me work harder, thrive and succeed at things people thought I would fail at. Most of all to be grateful despite of. My mom did the best she could to make sure I was good and I will forever be grateful for that.

So if you see me showcasing my successes, it’s because I deserve it, I worked my behind off and want everyone to know they can do it to. I never brag because that’s not me. You will never see me posting what I got, money, bragging or who I helped because I do it from the heart and the only person who needs to know is God.

There is a verse in the bible about boasting. Just like God gives it to you, he can take it away. I live by that.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well I have been working since the age of 15. I worked retail all my life and in the year 2002 I started in healthcare. I started Shades of Melanin Hair in 2019. The year of 2022, I decided to leave healthcare after 20 years and focus on my business.

Lesson I have learned throughout the years and working for someone else’s company is life is too short. Business is Business. Despite you being the best employee or whatever the case, these companies will replace you with no explanation. Always make time for your family. Start your own business if you can and put just as much effort into your business as you do working for someone else. That way you will never be replaceable.

My brand is a faith based company. We serve all women and provide the best quality real human hair extensions and wigs that look more natural and last a very long time. Most of our clients are African-American and Latino women between the ages of 30-45. Let’s not forget our remarkable customer service that our clients brag about.

We also offer suggestions and answer clients emails within 30 minutes.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in Houston, it’s so many places to hang out, eat and drink! So if my best friend came to visit, I would take her to Improv Comedy for a good laugh depending on who is performing that week. Since we are over 40, listen, we start getting sleepy by 9pm. Most likely we would go hang out and shop at the Galleria, grab lunch at Lucille’s Southern Cuisine, dinner from this Italian spot called Giacomo’s Cibo e Vino. A great nightlife hang out spot would be The Davenport, it’s a older crowd and upscale spot.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my husband, mother, stepfather, my beautiful daughters and grandmother most importantly! My cousin Nattra for helping me with so many things as well. Nattra is my first cousin and very creative!
