We had the good fortune of connecting with Keanna Hinds and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keanna, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The Toni Rose Foundation Inc was born ironically in 2019 after the tragic loss of my mother, Ms. Toni Rose in 2018. Yearning and searching for understanding during my own grief and bereavement journey sparked me to notice the need for and lack of grief resources in the African American community. The Toni Rose Foundation provides and promotes grief relief resources in the community with the help of social media to help bring awareness to the dier ongoing need of substantial grief programs.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Along with starting my non for profit, I also have a journalism and marketing company Kendi’s Korner LLC who I run with my 7 year old daughter
Kendall Nicole.
We recently co-wrote a children’s poem book called Grieving Granny which is a story about a child’s perspective on grief. After experiencing the tragic loss of my mother in 2018, I was in search of resources and tools to help me through the grieving process. Grieving Granny was created to support children that are facing grief. This book is a love letter to a grandmother from a child who is grieving and reflecting on her life since her transition. Through poetry, children are introduced to the feelings and emotions associated with grief. This book normalizes the grieving process and celebrates the power of imagination, reflection and creating memories.
Grieving Granny is an important resource to be shared with others regardless of their experience with grief. Mental health challenges are prevalent in our community and resources like Grieving Granny are needed to break the stigma of what death looks like to children near and far.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I am definitely a Brooklyn Caribbean girl by heart and I love to eat! A few restaurants I would recommend would be SugarCane, Peppa’s and Errols Bakery. For the holidays I love to explore the city and visiting Rockefeller Center and the Botanic Gardens will definitely be on the to do list!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout my lawyer Mr. Arthur Edwards who has been my mentor and voice of reason through all the ups and downs life continues to throw my way. He constantly reminds me that God will always see a way through it all!
