We had the good fortune of connecting with Keeng KB and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keeng, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is consistency and determination. In order to be successful, you must be consistent. Your determination determines your consistency. You can not be afraid of setbacks, trials and tribulations. In order to be successful, your consistency will overcome all barriers.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always wanted to be an entertainer. When I was young I used to put together shows and performances with my little sisters to show my mom. But as I grew up, I felt like I wasn’t capable of making a career out of my passion for entertainment. After I graduated college I decided to pursue my entertainment career in rapping first. It was not easy at first and sometimes it’s still not easy. I have a unique sound to my music especially compared to other Houston artists. I’m theatrical and animated in my music and that is not something that is too popular with male artists. I like to challenge myself with different flows, cadences and rhyme schemes. I like to use different literary elements such as puns and multiple entendres, all of which, again, is not too common for male artists from my perspective. Because of my style and sound, in the beginning, it was difficult to find people (producers & engineers) to work with that I felt comfortable being myself around. But by being consistent, authentically myself and determined, I was able to find a good team to help bring my musical visions to life. Through all of this, I wouldn’t say I “learned” anything. I was more so reminded of things like “hard work pays off” and “always be true to yourself and everything else will fall into place”. Things that I already knew, but took an experience for me to apply. I want the world to know that Keeng KB is an advocate for authenticity. There is a place in this world for ALL of us. All of us have a purpose. I encourage others to find their purpose and pursue that purpose unapologetically.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, to be honest, I wouldn’t even know where to start. I would definitely say they have to visit 13 and some other bars/restaurants in midtown, such as Taste, Lost & Found, and A’dor. We would also visit the Uptown area, stopping by places such as Kamp, Nomad, Domain, Uptown Hookah, and/or Prospect Park. Maybe venture to Locker Room in 3rd Ward. I would definitely take them by the Turkey Leg Hut to grab some food then spin to Bar 5015 or Chapman & Kirby. Depending on who it is and their comfortability, we could step out to the Montrose area for a good time. There’s so much to do here in Houston, that finding some good food, good music and good vibes is not difficult to do.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Any and everyone that has supported me in my many of journeys deserves a shout out! I appreciate all the support I receive from family, friends and even those I don’t know personally. It means a lot. When times are tough and I think about the support I’ve received thus far, it helps motivate me to keep going
