We had the good fortune of connecting with Keisha Johnson, PhD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keisha, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Wow, what a great question! I believe that the most important lesson that I have learned to date is to “be authentic”. When you are authentic or “true to yourself” your business/career should align with your purpose. Your purpose allows you to attract who and/or what you need to be successful in your chosen field. Being authentic allows a reciprocal harmonious relationship between you and the Universe to form in terms of “I will live out my life on purpose and give you (the Universe) what you need and you (the Universe) will return to me what I need to continue to feel “purposeful”. There have been times when I fell short of this principle and I noticed that my business did not flourish consistently. I used to worry about why my business was not “cooperating” despite all of the effort I was putting into it. It was not until I realized that all that “effort” was getting in the way of my ability to remain authentic and in alignment of my purpose. Once I surrendered from the worry several years ago, the rest is history….
What should our readers know about your business?
As a licensed clinical psychologist, all I ever wanted to do was be of service to my community in the area of mental health. Where I came from, my community are underrepresented people of color that did not have access to good standards of community care. In addition, if there was access to care, the professionals rarely looked like myself. I’m proud to be an African American woman in a position to assist individuals, specifically people of color with their mental health. I have the unique opportunity to eradicate the stereotypes and/or taboos that are associated with seeking mental health services that many in my community have. In addition to being a clinical psychologist, I am also a certified Naturopathic Reiki Master. Reiki is an energy healing practice with many benefits. I found that verbally discussing issues were not enough for some individuals, especially those that suffered trauma. Reiki provided these clients another form of healing without having to use words. With the practice of Energy healing (Reiki), I have been able to help my clients more holistically (physically and spiritually) in addition to addressing the emotional/psychological needs. This path has not been an easy one for me. It has presented it’s share of challenges from the joys and pitfalls in my doctoral education, developing confidence in my abilities while working for others, to stepping out on faith to become a business owner. However, the path that was set out for me was necessary for this journey to alignment in purpose. All of the obstacles, pitfalls, joys, successes were all by the Universe’s design for me to learn all about ME! Now my purpose is to share all that I continue to learn with my community and provide them with the tools for their holistic alignment. What I would want my community to know about Jacobs Ladder Psychological Services, PLLC is that is a sacred space for all to be authentic. I am a Divine reflection of all the individuals in my community. I see them as they see me. Together, let’s make sure that the mirror shows a person that is genuine, fulfilled, and healthy in mind, body, and spirit!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So if my best friend came to visit, I would encourage her to come during the Houston Rodeo. I believe the Houston Rodeo is one of the most iconic events in the Houston area. Not to mention the amazing barbeque that we would constantly be exposed to. While she was here, we would definitely shop until we drop. I would take her to the Galleria Mall for more of the high end finds, but then take her to some of the local boutiques and weekend markets in Houston’s Third Ward area for more unique pieces. I love the idea of supporting small businesses. We also love nature, so a trip to Galveston Beach and/or Lake Conroe would be a must to be close to the water. Memorial Park is also on the list for walking trails to keep us physically fit. And every night, we would find a restaurant to fit our taste buds. Some of my favorite spots are Phil & Dereks, Turkey Leg Hut, Taste, and El Tiempo Cantina for some Mexican flare. Lastly, I believe that our music scene is one of the best, so hopefully we can catch some acts at House of Blues Houston or local talent at the Alley Kat Houston.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family lineage (ancestral and immediate family) and my soul family (spiritual mentors and partners) deserve all of the credit for who I am today. These are too many people to name in this space, but they know who they are. I humbly honor all of you. To learn who I am past and present and accept who I am has been key in living out my purpose which is to be of service to my community.
