Meet Kelis Woods & Greg Grady | Corporate Storytellers & Media Strategist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelis Woods & Greg Grady and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelis Woods & Greg Grady, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think a lot of people forget that the business that they build is their business, meaning that you can show up and do what it is that YOU want.
A lot of people are afraid to do things differently because there is a lot of sensitivity in the world of media where you can’t say certain things, you can’t do certain things, or you need to dress a certain way, but that’s not what Havick is about…
We want to create media that ACTUALLY WORKS and not just these ‘cool’ videos that are trending on social media.
But in today’s society, every platform, the internet itself, is flooded because media is so easy to create now; effective media on the other hand is extremely hard to do.
I think we’re gaining that traction because we are provocative. We don’t mind telling you that you’re wrong, we don’t mind telling you that your media sucks, but we’re also gonna tell you how you can improve it, what you can do right, and how you can actually achieve the results you want with that media.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What most excites us about this media production company that we’ve created, Havick, is that we are not like anyone else, and that’s an integral thing for a brand. You have to differentiate yourself by just being you, and the people are seeing that.
We don’t care about views. We don’t care about virality. We care about creating media under our name that’s gonna reach the business owners ready to make a change, whether that’s an emotional video to connect with their audience or videos that align with their marketing strategies.
This was not easy at all…
We were taught how to create effective media, but no one ever taught us how to run a business, and that’s been the biggest challenge.
But we learned quickly that we needed a scalable solution to get more people into our inboxes versus us reaching out to them. So we went down this long journey of building a social media presence for ourselves that’s still in the works, but it is reaching the right people.
We make it our policy to be candid when it comes to talking about being business owners; we tell the good, the bad, and the ugly to keep us humble and relatable. Getting to where we are now has been a crazy ride: sleepless nights, mental pains, mental struggles, and spending the last of our dollars trying to market our business. It’s been an interesting and rewarding nightmare.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Not too sure about an itinerary; you gotta go off of vibes at the moment.
Houston always has something going on. For food, we would have grab the West African flavors at ChopnBlok, then we gotta dig into brisket and ribs at Blood Brothers BBQ, and maybe grab some pho. For seafood with a twist, Clawdaddy is a must. You have to hit places that represent what Houston is best known for.
As for entertainment…when the weather’s nice, the Rooftop Cinema Club in Uptown is a personal favorite. You haven’t visited Houston until you’ve gotten lost in the Galleria while shopping, exploring the Houston Zoo or the Aquarium depending on how hot it is, and we can unwind at Buffalo Bayou Park. For live entertainment, the Houston Symphony has some beautiful music pieces, and the Hobby Center hosts incredible plays if that’s more your vibe and the Museum of Fine Arts or the Houston Museum of Natural Science are great this time of year.
There are a ton of seasonal events around town: festivals, holiday lights, and pop-up markets and bars that make every time of year exciting.
I’m pretty sure we’d need more than a week for all that, though.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We’d like to pay respects to the Digital Media program at the University of Houston. We were taught what it means to actually create media that matters. It wasn’t about chasing fancy trends, using fancy software, or just creating noise in the world.
The fundamentals of the program were: “How do you get this message to the right person?” That’s what we live by. How can we tell the best stories and get the right message to the right people for your business?
