We had the good fortune of connecting with Ken Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ken, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I felt I owed it to myself to at least try my hand at something that I was such a huge fan of, which is stand up comedy. Also, as a child I was always the class clown/comic relief in school and around friends and family so it was kind of a personal challenge to see if I could get the same reaction from perfect strangers that I did from everyone else.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well I’ve been told that my stage presents and authenticity sets me apart from other comedians. I am certainly most proud of receiving a standing ovation at the word famous Apollos Theatre. I actually got booed there before so to return in such triumphant fashion for my second television appearance is surely a crowning moment for me. My journey has definitely not been easy. As an artists everyone’s path is different. There is no blueprint on how to achieve success. However, I do believe that consistency, believing in yourself and remaining proactive will always put you in a winning position. Challenges will continuously present themselves in endeavor but if you simply remind yourself of the goal and that challenging times are strictly temporary it can make those trying time a little easier to deal with. The ultimate lesson I’ve learned is to absolutely and positively never give up on yourself. No matter how hard the journey gets or how large the obstacle may seem, there is a new opportunity on the other side. At the end of the day I’d just like everyone to know that whenever they attend a Ken Boyd show that they will undoubtedly get their money’s worth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Monday I’d take them to a Houston Rockets game. Tuesday we’d go to an Astros game. Wednesday Texans game. Thursday we’d go to Turkey leg hut. Friday would be the Aquarium. Saturday I’d take them to the Breakfast Klub then some shopping at the Galleria. We’d end the week right at Onyx.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I unequivocally would have to acknowledge my good friend Kofi Smith which I benevolently refer to as “Drop.” Kofi and I were roommates for the first six years I lived in New York City. Within that six years I experienced seasons of financial uncertainty. If it had not been for his understanding and occasional assistance, my time in New York would have surely been short lived.
