We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenya Mims and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenya, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Organized, Time conscious, and Persistent.
All these 3 habits helped me succeed in publishing my book. I am a very organized and detail-oriented person, so it was easy to keep things in order, find old journals, plan for important dates around publishing, etc. I have always been a stickler for time, I do not like being late for anything. Matter of fact, when my friends or family are late and I am involved, they hear from me, lol. Having deadlines with the publisher and giving myself personal deadlines allowed room for corrections and adjustments with no effect to production. All plans surrounding my book went according to the original schedule and contract. I can be very adamant about things I am motivated to do. I am not a real persuasive person, nor do I care to pressure other people about things. When I set my mind to do something or create a goal to reach, I am active in making sure I make that achievement no matter what.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work for a third-party HR company where I am a Benefits Specialist. Career wise I am not satisfied, and I am consistently putting in effort to get to where I want and need to be professionally. I graduated Dec 2019 from grad school with my Masters in Human Resource Development and my focus has been to work within my passion of helping develop others in a way that they could be successful. It is not easy doing something when you know you are ready and have prepared yourself for more. What I have learned over this past year is to not give up, push through, be intentional, and to have confidence in your personal ability and worth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Personally, I am such a homebody, the most I get out is when family come into town(lol). However, I do have a few places that I would go or things I would do with others…..I just visited the Color Factory, which was so fun, I felt like a big kid! Places to hang out and eat or drink would be: Moxie’s, ErmaRose Winery, Christian’s Bar and Grill, Memorial Park, Discovery Green, Grace’s, The Rouxpour, Fainmous, see a show at the Improv (pre-Covid), or a lounge with live music.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Shoutouts for my book success would first be to God. I have endured so much throughout all the seasons I wrote about and without him I wouldn’t have made it through any of them. I never knew how strong of a woman I was until I had to go through so many ups and downs. He never left my side and for that I will always shout HIM out! A second shoutout would be to my baby sister who was the motivator for me writing this book. Tracy, I love you gal! She believed in me and saw things in me that I sometimes still do not see. She motivated, encouraged, pushed, prayed for, and supported me throughout my entire healing process and during my book process. Forever grateful to my supportive and loving friends back home and here in Houston.
