We had the good fortune of connecting with Keosha Lemon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keosha, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
There is a lesson in every situation you encounter. I believe in business you’ll have the opportunity to have a learning experience almost every time you conduct business so I’ve learned to be more patient with people, have compassion empathy when needed and also to be firm at the same time. I’ve been taught to have an open mind and take constructive criticism and then apply it without questioning myself and if needed teach those who were thinking as I did so that they wont make those same mistakes. Ill never have all the answers and there are times I wont even get it right but as long as I keep the many teachings I’ve had along the way I can be as successful as i allow myself to be.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been a braider for 20 years now consistently and branched out to other hair services throughout the years. I started out at 9 years old braiding neighborhood kids, their moms, aunts, my family and friends hair lol my father told me i needed to start charging around 10/11 years old because at that time it was no longer a hobby for me i wanted to grow up and be the best braid stylist…and thats when i decided i would do just that! Ive had many obstacles along the way but i never let it break me. My dad always told me i needed multiple streams of income and im a creative person he believed i could do anything and so did I. With that i decided to study Herbs years later as a teenager. I became intrigued with my grandmothers practice and wanted to learn all about healing our bodies natrually. I took some courses and became certified and fell in love with making natrual Teas and skin products for clients just for various reasons. What helped is my hair clients would recommend and so i started to serve a dual purpose. I am greatful for all the lessons and blessing this road was never meant to be easy but i wanted it more than i didnt want it and that was all the push i needed.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Okay so first of all Houston dont sleep lol 😂 Ive traveled a lot of places and i can honestly say this place is LIT!! There’s so much to do, so many places to see and so many things to eat. Our first stop is getting her some Boudin!!! Lol she has to taste that lil piece of life in a sausage 😂 Then we’d probably hit Galveston beach for a few hours and head back to get sleep cause lord knows this heat is disrespectful out here and you cant be outside too long lol the next day id probably take her to brunch at Seaside then go bar hopping on Washington Ave maybe hit the Galleria Mall a lil tipsy or whateva lol And at night we going to 1 of my favorite spots PLAYGROUNDDD. i love that place i can be swinging while drinking and then go get on some giant sea-saws. Morning comes we’re going to the breakfast club for some Catfish and grits (which foot exactly do yall put in there?) lol probably head to Bar2200 after for happy hour and chill. Im not a part girl anymore so we most likely done after all those places but before she leaves we’ll go get Soul food Vegan and turkey leg hut…gotta take her to Emancipation park so she can get her black history on!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wanna shout out God 1st because without him nothing moves. My parents Kal & Lora are super supportive! My dad keeps me going and my mom keeps me up. My sisters Brittany & Necey always want the best for me every idea i have they are the 1st to know via group chat lol My brother Ashton is my biggest fan always rooting for me no matter where he is. My best friend Ashley has been my light there isnt enough words to describe how she supports me. I also want to shout out my city of St Petersburg, Florida for making me. Ive been inspired by so many great people along the way Houston has really opened my eyes to an empowering movement and i thank Houston for that ❤
