Meet Kerwin Escobar | AC & Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kerwin Escobar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kerwin, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been drawn to the way visuals can tell a story without saying a word. From a young age, I was fascinated by cameras — not just how they captured moments, but how they shaped emotion and perspective. Over time, that fascination turned into a purpose. Working as a 1st AC lets me combine both the creative and the technical sides of filmmaking: precision, discipline, and artistry all in one.
What keeps me in this field is knowing that my work directly supports the creative vision — that every frame I help bring into focus is part of something bigger. It’s not just a job; it’s being part of a team that turns imagination into something real, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart as a 1st Assistant Camera is how I approach the job — with a mix of technical precision, calm leadership, and genuine respect for the process. My goal is always to keep the camera team running smoothly so the creative vision can flow without interruption.
Getting here took time, patience, and a lot of learning. I started by studying every piece of gear I could get my hands on and paying attention to how experienced ACs handled pressure. Over time, I learned that this role isn’t just about keeping things in focus — it’s about communication, trust, and creating an environment where everyone can do their best work.
What I want people to know is that I take pride in being that steady presence on set — the person who stays composed, solves problems quietly, and makes sure the team feels supported from start to finish.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d start by showing them Houston’s food scene, Candente is a must for Tex-Mex and even recognized by the Michelin Guide, and Blood Bros BBQ never disappoints, both great spots for good food and chill vibes.
For drinks, I’d recommend City Orchard and Tejas, two local breweries with great menus and an easy atmosphere. Monkey’s Tail is another favorite — it’s got amazing Latino energy, great cocktails, and feels like home every time.
We’d have to stop by Meow Wolf for something immersive and creative, then swing next door to Saint Arnold Brewery. And if they’re into art and culture, I’d tell them to check out the Museum of Natural Science, Museum of Fine Arts, Contemporary Arts Museum, and River Oaks Theatre — all staples of Houston’s creative scene.
To wrap it up, White Oak Music Hall and 713 Music Hall are perfect for catching a live show. Houston’s got the perfect mix of great food, creativity, and real Southern hospitality — it’s a city that surprises people in the best way.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a huge shoutout to IYO Visuals for all the opportunities they’ve given me over the past five years. Through them, I’ve had the chance to work with incredible artists and brands — from Megan Thee Stallion and the City of Houston to campaigns for Nike and Adidas, sometimes multiple times over. Those experiences really shaped me as a 1st AC and gave me the space to grow both technically and creatively.
I also want to recognize Heaven Studios for the work we’ve done recently. A team truly feels like family. Together, we’ve collaborated on projects featuring Will Smith, Lecrae, Drake, Nike, the Chicago Bulls, and Dallas Trinity FC — and every one of those experiences reminded me why I love what I do. It’s about teamwork, trust, and a shared drive to create something exceptional. I’m grateful to both teams for believing in me and helping me keep pushing my craft forward.
