We had the good fortune of connecting with Kesha Gilbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kesha, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I hope I have a legacy that reflects that of a healer. I hope people remember me as an energetic spirit. A trustworthy individual who they could easily connect to going from stranger to confidant. I hope people remember me as someone who they felt comfortable with sharing their win stories as well as trials and tribulations. Someone who uplifted them during their times of need. Someone who was able to empower others and support them in their growth. A genuine soul with an impactful community.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an in person and online fitness coach who just recently relocated from Los Angeles to Houston. I began coaching group fitness classes in 2019 and really expanded my independent business during the pandemic coaching clients 1 on 1 and in small groups and hosting wellness events around LA.
I visualize myself as a gym therapist, transforming and coaching my clients in their physical fitness as well as their overall mental and emotional well being. A lot of self improvement takes place when people make the decision to take care of their bodies and I truly enjoy being a part of the entire growth process. Fitness and connecting with others is my passion, and being able to infuse my knowledge into my clients while watching their growth brings me so much joy.
It’s been a learning experience for me at just about every step of the way and it was not always an easy journey. From the small details of strategizing, marketing, creating, finances and maintaining a book of business, there’s always room for improvement and things don’t always start out running smoothly. I find when you’re working in your purpose and being authentic in every step, you build relationships and create a community that makes the small failures and tough learning experiences less daunting. Prioritizing the connections and impact over the minute details and natural desire to be “perfect” helped me tremendously along the way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a new resident to Houston, I’ve been exploring lots of places and learning where all of the fun is! I’m loving attending different activities whether it be enjoying fitness classes at O Athletik in the heights, networking with women in a faith based meetup group Faith in Her, creating content at The Blank Canvas Space, indulging in cozy coffee shop vibes downtown at Fifth Vessel Coffee Co. or trying goat yoga in Midtown with Goat Yoga Houston. I’m really making a point to try new experiences and get fully acquainted here in my new home!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to recognize the role my handful of original clients had in the success of both my story and my business. When I first began training clients, I had one foot in the door and the other out as I was navigating the entrepreneur role and all that comes with being a fitness coach. I have a handful of women who have been with me since day one and provided the support, feedback and confidence I needed at that time to continue to build and perfect my business, training style and overall brand. I’ll always be grateful for their role in my development which allowed me to be able to do the same for others.
