We had the good fortune of connecting with Keyanna Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keyanna, how do you think about risk?
Quitting my job without having a fall back plan or a safety net was probably the biggest risk I’ve ever taken, also being the best decision I ever made. I believe you hustle harder when you know all you have to depend on is yourself. I’m the type of person who has to put In a “sink or swim” situation to be able to rise to the occasion.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make baked goods infused with cannabis/cbd for medicinal purposes. What makes my business different is the homemade feel of it all, not only are you buying my product because it relieves pain, stress, or helps with dietary issues, but it also taste like something your grandmother made to make you feel better, you can taste and feel the love. I am where I am today because I believed in myself enough to step out of my comfort zone, move from my home town, just me and my daughter and I have to wake up everyday with a goal and a plan and I don’t then my failure or losses are all on me. That fear pushes me to stay afloat , it’s not easy but it’s necessary. I’ve learned I have to acknowledge my small wins. Every entrepreneur has a vision, the vision may be so big that we overlook the details along the way to create the picture we’re trying to create in the first place. So if I set a goal to have my orders out by a certain date and I meet it I’ll treat myself to a glass of wine and reflect on that moment and to be grateful that there wasn’t any obstacles preventing me to meet that goal. No matter how small the win is I’ve learned to be grateful. I want the world to know that I love what I do and I love being able to provide for my daughter by doing something that I love by helping people and it’s literally the best feeling in the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well seeing how I’m vegan, I alway take visitors to Vegan Food house so they can get a taste of what my daily diet consists of. I go to a few brunch places like 360 brunch, or first watch they have a great healthy variety of breakfast and lunch meals. For night life I go to deep ellum or a hookah lounge, maybe bitterend on a Sunday.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A person I’d like to shout out specifically is my grandmother Geraldine Williams, she allowed me to sit in the kitchen with her after she’d work long shifts and then come home to fulfill orders of cakes and other baked goods. My family has always supported me when it comes to my business however my grandmother inspired my love for cooking. Also I’d like to shout out cannabis training university for teaching me the techniques I use daily. The certification from that institution has solidified my work with creditability I need for my customers to trust my product.
