We had the good fortune of connecting with Kia Renee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kia, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
That’s a great question! I choose an artistic and creative career because I am a free spirit! I believe creative insights emotion. It can be therapeutic. Art is about expression. Fashion is art. It’s how we express how we feel.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a kinesthetic learner. I am hands on. I like to hit the pavement and get to work. Sure, social media is fun. However, getting out to meet new people and finding new adventures is my thing! I love life! To be in it! I believe it sets me apart from others because instead of hitting record I’d rather live in the moment!
Growing up I wasn’t raised in a wealthy or middle class family. At the age of 13 I got my first job making $75 a week babysitting. Typical am I right? What can I say, it’s a right of passage. Working 6pm to 6am. From then I knew I would always work to money in my pocket. It felt good to be paid for something I was good at. I felt worthy and of course enjoyed my small financial freedom. Of course I thought I was rolling in dough. I loved it! I never stopped working. My family motivated my to work. To have a better lifestyle. So, I never stopped working. I began modeling, doing photo shoots, fashion shows. I even worked at Astroworld at the age 15.
Being an entrepreneur or an independent contractor isn’t the easiest job, but it’s the most fulfilling! There is no blueprint. You have to create it. There’s no going into work with a written out plan. I have to wake up everyday with the exact same “Let’s do this!” attitude. No one works for me, pays my bills, or takes care of my family. It’s my duty. My family is my motivation. That’s how I made it to where I am in life today. I’ve had my highs and lows in business, but once you finally figure out that plan it’s so worth it.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way of being an entrepreneur is to have patience because nothing happens overnight. I’ve learned to value building business relationships and servicing others. I know and have also learned that you give before you can receive. To humble yourself. Know that everyday isn’t always good day, but I’m here and I’m fighting for what I want. It’s ok to take a break. It’s ok to live.
I want the world to know that the Kia Renee brand is ever evolving! My husband and I have recent opened our very first business together and I am a soon to be Talent Mananger. Representing various music artists, Philanthropists, and models. My brand isn’t all about me. My brand represents my counterparts. My peers. I value customer service and believe in helping others. When I needed help I received it and it’s only right to pass it on.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is the most beautiful city with great sights and amazing food! We would visit IPic for a relaxing movie with food and drinks. They have the most delicious cheddar biscuits. I’d taker her to Hermann Park, Houston Zoo, and also the Museum of Fine Arts.
I also love this hidden gem called El Pueblito. They have the best fish ceviche. My good friend and owner of Fashion Haus introduced me. I love her for that! The last place I’d like to take her to is City Centre. It’s very relaxing and has lots do like rock climbing, gourmet cooking classes, and at night it comes alive!
If you’re visiting Houston, you have to visit the Holocaust Museum. It offers so much knowledge into the lives of those who dealt with tragedy. It tells us a story that is sure to touch your heart. The museum district is just the place to be! We have over 150 museums in our beautiful city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this Shoutout to my husband Julius. I don’t know where I’d be without his constant unconditional love and support. No matter how big I dream he always says, “I’m riding with you, Mama.” He’s NEVER let me down.
My husband has watched me laugh, struggle, work from sun up to sun down, cry, uplift others, and put my all into everything I do. He’s never changed on me and has always kept his word. I love him more than life itself. He’s the most beautiful and wise person I’ve ever met. He’s an old soul, gives amazing advice, and is a great listener. That’s what everyone needs sometimes. He’s my person.
