We had the good fortune of connecting with Kid Styles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kid Styles, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

I have been an artist all my life and as I attended school, I would always have a drawing pad, markers and pencils with me. My art was on all my folders and clothes so classmates started to ask and pay me to draw for them. When I got to high school I became the school artist. As graduation time was near I quickly realized I was getting paid for what I love to do and I need to make it an official business. I eventually was doing so much work that I got a store in the mall in my hometown, Detroit while I was still in high school.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I am an artist who is very versatile. From creating art on sketchbooks with markers, color pencils to graphic design, illustrations, creating my own cartoons, printing shirts, custom airbrushing and doing murals for clients. I love that I have an ability to create a clients logo, business cards, brochures, banners, print their shirts, signs, design vehicle wraps and maybe custom paint a mural or logo go in the business. I enjoy producing the full branding package and the clients feel more comfortable knowing the work is coming from one place. All of that can definitely keep me busy professionally.

What sets me apart from other artists,  is that I am working in many types of mediums. There might be some who do 1 or 2 things out of my list of artistic services but not all. I talk to a client, then create multiple parts of their visual branding for their business. This gives them assurance to get the business up and running visually.

I am most proud at working with clients and bringing their vision to a reality. Which happens to be my slogan, “Vision 2 Reality”. The 2 is used in the slogan because I was born on the 2nd.

I got to I where I am today from strong confidence and having my own artistic look for my work mixed with the go-getter mentality. Was it easy? Definitely not, I overcame many challenges by being focused at my goal, sticking to my word at completing jobs, being a social person for casual and business to help connect deals.

Lesson I’ve learned along the way is: To always plan out your moves, Don’t always expect a great outcome when doing business because things can happen like rain while being at an outside vendor, Do not start on any work without a deposit, Make an invoice. Detail things on the invoice so the client can’t assume more work than discussed. And do not look at all the money you earn as a profit. You need to replace the stock/ supplies that you just used to do it all over again.

I would like the world to know that I’m an artist from the heart, been doing this all my life, very skilled at what I do and if you truly want things in life go after it. It might not be easy but don’t get discouraged. Find a way to achieve the results that you are looking for to make you and your business the best!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

I would take a friend to eat at Juicy Crab, Joey Uptown, Grand Luxe, Juliettes, Steak 48 and Warwick for the food and great service at dining. The Velvet Taco and Torchy’s Taco for good finger foods and drinks.

If we are out for a couple drinks I would say Chuys for margaritas, Bar 5015 for drinks and patio concerts, Chapman & Kirby for brunch and day parties, Turkey Leg Hut hangout and eating on Almeda and Prospect Park bar.

Fun places – Bar 5015, Post, Galleria, Midtown, 3rd Ward, City Centre, Graffiti walls downtown Houston, O2 Lounge, Post downtown and Improv Comedy Club.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I would like to dedicate a shoutout to a couple of people. First God for life and the blessing of my artistic gift. My parents: mother – artistic side and my father with the hard working hustle and his ingenuity at solving things. DJ K-Rock a good friend who is the dj for rap legend, MC Lyte. He invited me on tour with them back in the 90’s. J Prince owner of Rap-A-Lot Records who I met on tour. He seen my artworks and gave me the position in Houston to be the graphic designer at the label for so many hip hop legends. And last but definitely not least my wonderful wife Nakita. She is there for me at supporting my artistic vision for the business, making moves to help things run smoother and gives me even more confidence at being who I am as an artist and husband.
