We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Dubois and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in a small town just north of Milwaukee Wisconsin. Growing up my dad was a paramedic and I just knew I wanted to be a nurse. He ended up passing away when I was 12 and when that happened I just knew I wanted to pursue that path even more. Now looking back on it, what I actually wanted to do was to take care of people.
When I was 17 I threw my mom’s surprise 50th birthday party. I loved every minute of it. Sending out invites, coordinating a park and ride from a local church to our house, and the execution of the actual event. it gave me life, but didn’t think much of it at the time.
I went onto college and studied nursing which was not as exciting as I wanted it to be. Against everything my mom taught me, I quit my job one day as a nursing assistant and that was that. I gave up what I thought was a life long dream. I didn’t know where to go from there.
I was chatting with my sister one day and she said to me, “Well what do you like to do?” I had been asked that many times before, but my answer went back to nursing and taking care of people in that realm. She then went on to say, “well you love weddings don’t you?” A light went on! I got off the phone and started researching what it would take to become a wedding planner.
I went online to got a certification. Having been in the industry now for almost nine year, I can look back on my life and see how I now get to care for people, but in a whole different way. Not only do I get to serve them on the wedding day, which a lot of people think is all I do. But also through the planning process, but through the ups and downs that come with planning such a special event. I get to be a non bias sounding board for my clients and really help them get to where they truly want to be. To say I am blessed is an understatement.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets Good as Gold Weddings apart from other planning companies is that we come from a true background of helping people. That is what is in our hearts and will always be the foundation of our company.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my gosh! What a fun question. We are new to the area but have found nothing but great stuff to do in Houston. We would start with Citycentre and get breakfast at Sweet Paris and do some shopping. Then head over to the Galleria area and do some more shopping. Can you tell what my hobbies are? As someone who is not from Houston, I would also do a day at the beach in Galveston and you guessed it, shopping in the downtown area. I am always up for an adventure though too, so the aquarium, zoo or multiple museums around here would also be fun to do!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think the first group of people to give a shout out to is my family. My mom, sister and husband. They not only helped me get to where I wanted to be, but continue to do so. They are my number one cheerleaders.
The next group is to those that gave me a chance. Cheryl Lynn, the one who gave me an internship so I could dip my toes into the wedding industry. The one who got me hooked! Her along with my previous employer, who I got the pleasure to work with for almost 5 years with and who I learned so much from.
Finally all of my clients. Each couple comes to me and allow me to guide them on the planning journey. Those who have trusted me to plan and deliver such a special day for them.
