We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Hartz and Courtney Campo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim and Courtney, every day, we talk about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I (Kim) was talking to another mom about why there aren’t any good options for kids sunglasses. The options were either super cheap or involved a lot of up sells to get what I wanted for my kids making them pricey. So, instead of shrugging my shoulders and moving on, I started to talk with Courtney about the possibility of creating our own line of kids sunglasses that included everything we wanted, such as polarized lenses, fun colors, 100% UVA/UVB protection, and all at a price that wasn’t cringe worthy. What started as an idea became a fully fledged business with a lot of hard work, finding the right manufacturers, the right branding, and a lot of knocking on doors.
What should our readers know about your business?
We launched Sunnies Shades in August 2021, and it has been a whirlwind ever since! There are definitely lots of kids sunglasses on the market to choose from, but, Sunnies, have a leg up on the others because unlike other brands, we will never create an up sell for something that should come standard on your kids sunglasses. Things like polarization, UVA/UVB protection, and an anti-slip feature to keep your kids Sunnies in place. Another feature that makes our sunglasses different is that kids actually want to wear them because they are so fun and different. Kids can pick their Sunnies based on their likes and personality, and it’s so much fun to see kids put them on for the first time. Their faces light up!
We are constantly trying to meet new people and get our name out there. We’ve definitely have to make sure we stay positive, keep working hard, and not give up when things get tough. Luckily, we have a great support system from like minded business owners, friends, family and wonderful customers.
Sunnies are more than just a kids sunglass that offers polarization standard and 100% UVA/UVB protection, they allow kids to express themselves and actually enjoy wearing sunglasses, which is incredibly important for their eye health.
