We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Epperson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
In contemplating risks, the concept of faith consistently comes to mind. Life is inherently about choices and embracing risks. Without taking risks, how can one truly know, grow and learn? This is where faith in a higher power becomes paramount. For me, that higher power is God and His word. I firmly believe that taking risks is an act of faith, trusting that the choices we make align with His purpose for us.
Reflecting on my career, the most significant risk I’ve ever taken was establishing my private practice as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, simultaneously venturing into the realm of small business ownership. This decision meant leaving a stable job of 13 years with commendable pay, entering the unknown with minimal experience as a business owner. However, my faith in what God promised to do for me, as I committed to serving others through His work, helped me to tackle the fears and worry I had about the unknown.
Throughout this journey, my faith in God has been my guiding light. It has enabled me to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship and to acquire the necessary knowledge about business and mental health resources. Surprisingly, opportunities have presented themselves through individuals who chose my clinic over others, opening doors I could never have imagined. My ultimate goal and passion lie in aiding my community by addressing mental health issues and assisting individuals in achieving the quality of life they deserve.
In the realm of risks, the decision to take them is a daily choice that permeates all aspects of life. Some individuals are natural risk-takers, ready for whatever may come, while others like myself find solace in relying on a higher power to ease the decision-making process when faced with risks.
I just think when it comes to risks, they can definitely become complex and challenging, but as long as you hold on to your faith, it becomes a guide that empowers you to confront those risks with either a sense of assurance or a sense of fear or worry.
What should our readers know about your business?
Having devoted numerous years to the field of mental health, I’ve witnessed both the positive and negative aspects of how mental health patients are treated. Sadly, many individuals are often regarded as mere numbers, not taken seriously, and their voices go unheard—a sentiment echoed in the complaints of other patients about their past interactions with mental health staff.
In establishing my private practice, my primary objective and source of excitement lie in extending help to as many individuals in my community struggling with mental illness as possible. My commitment is to create an environment where patients, and anyone who seeks assistance, are treated with unparalleled kindness, respect, and within the safe haven of a non-judgmental atmosphere. In my practice, patients are not merely treated for their conditions; they are embraced as complete human beings.
From a business perspective, navigating this journey has been challenging, and I’ve encountered valuable lessons along the way. However, my unwavering faith in God has been my guiding light. Through this faith, I’ve been blessed with supportive individuals—whom I fondly refer to as “angels”—placed in my life to help navigate the challenges and steer my clinic towards success. A mantra that empowers me during difficult moments is the belief that “one must lose to win.”
What I wish the world to understand about me, my brand, and my story is that my approach is rooted in compassion and love for my work. The intersection of mental health and business is undoubtedly challenging, yet when driven by a genuine love that is recognized by God, success becomes inevitable. I firmly believe that by consistently doing the right things in life and with people, blessings, success, and abundance naturally follow. Surrounding myself with positive people, those who uplift, support, and genuinely want to see me succeed in life and in my business is a testament to the positive impact of doing what I love.
Embracing change as new seasons unfold is a necessary part of the process, no matter how challenging. In life and business, these transformations pave the way for growth, and with the right mindset, every hurdle becomes an opportunity for positive change.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well first, since I’m such a foodie and a very laid-back person, I would start our night with a nice steak at The Taste of Texas, picking our own steak with a nice salad and their fabulous bread or Fogo de Chao to eat a variety of different tasty meats and a glass of wine.
After that, I would end the night at a nice lounge with live jazz or live R&B music in the background socializing and having a good time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
