We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Loving and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always had a passion for entrepreneurship and began acting on this passion when I was 11 years old selling craft string to my classmates at school. This lead to other ventures and once I decided to attend college, I studied business with a focus in entrepreneurship & merchandising. In 2012 ,during my sophomore year in college , the initial idea for my cosmetics company was to have a nail polish line. The idea grew to be much more and in 2019, Loving Lacquer Cosmetics, LLC was officially formed. Loving Lacquer Cosmetics is a cosmetics company that merges art and beauty by connecting the creative community. I believe that makeup is a tool that can be used to create art just like paint, clay, pencils, and other materials that may be used to create the art that you would see in a museum. As an art and beauty enthusiast, this company is my way of expressing my appreciation for all forms of art. What should our readers know about your business?
Loving Lacquer Cosmetics is a company that merges art and beauty by connecting the creative community. Makeup is a tool used to create art just like paint, clay, and other materials used by artists. Loving Lacquer Cosmetics’ products have unique concepts which sets it apart from others. Getting here today wasn’t necessarily easy. I wanted to start the company in 2012 but I did not know how to go about it where the products that I wanted to sell were safe for distribution. I remember speaking to a professor at my college about producing cosmetics. At the time, I wanted to make my own nail polish, but the professor urged me not to due to the strict regulations on beauty products. From 2012 to 2019, I went back and forth with myself about starting the company because I felt that I didn’t know how to go about it properly. I got tired of constantly telling my friends about the idea and not acting on it, so in 2019 the business was officially formed. Sourcing vendors to accomplish my vision for the brand was a challenge. I was very close to not having all of the products for my launch day because of how long it took to find vendors and get the products pictured for the website and organized. I have learned many lessons along the way but what I would tell other entrepreneurs is keep going even if you get discouraged and take your time. Keeping this in mind is how I overcame challenges. What I want the world to know about Loving Lacquer Cosmetics is that we are a brand for everyone because in some way, shape, form, or fashion we are all artists.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not from Houston so I honestly haven’t been to as many places as I should. However, I would take them to popular places to eat such as The Turkey Leg Hut, Krab Queenz, and The Breakfast Club. We would go to The Galleria mall for shopping since it is a large mall with many choices. We could also ice skate there. We would also visit the Erma Rose winery in Katy.Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents. Both of my parents exhibited entrepreneurship when I was growing up and nurtured my interest in it. I also would like to dedicate my shoutout to two of my college professors, Dr. Gibbs and Dr. Sequiera, for their mentorship and influence during my undergraduate years in college. Lastly, I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my friends and “business besties “ who keep me motivated.
