We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Merritt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am originally from Detroit MI., and since have moved around quite a bit. My family regularly played the sounds of Motown, soul, blues and jazz, and so my musical preferences as well as inspirations are rooted in those sounds. A blaring saxophone that tells as much of its own story as do the lyrics. A melodic bass that keeps the pulse of a groove. A journey narrated through vocals – of love, loss, unbridled joy or sorrow. All of these themes and styles that I lean into have originated from the music my family exposed me to.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a singer-songwriter and producer (as well as a sound engineer from time to time), and have been for the past almost decade! I was not an “on the stage” musician for that full time, but I have grown into my artistry and dabbled in many spaces in music over the years.
What sets me apart from others I believe is an unbridled joy and humor I infuse into my music. Not every song I write is joyful or happy, not at all. But there is an authenticity to my storytelling I believe that is wrapped up warmly in my humor . I make lyrically compelling music, and I’m striving to blend those lyrics with truly fun and energizing melodies!
The journey of self has not been easy, and I think that is what at times has made music more challenging. When I’ve been able to let go and get out of my own way, the music has come pretty naturally – whether that is the composition or lyrics. But I have struggled at times with self-esteem and self-belief in ways that has caused me to slow down on my music or be less consistent. Through my self work though, I have learned how to truly enjoy every part of the process, from creating the music to reaching out to folks to network to marketing and social media. Getting my mind right was essential in enabling me to enjoy the full process of music making, and to really take stock of everything I’ve done. I’ve often felt like I started too late or don’t make enough of an impact, but by slowing down and really making an effort to enjoy the process, I feel the joy of creation, regardless of the results (and I can notice and feel much more gratitude for all of the support I receive from folks!)
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love this question and I have a list for such occasions! Living in New York there is so much to do, and I like to spend my time eating! I have a restaurant list and I think a short food tour would be in order. We are starting off at brunch at Rule of Thirds in Greenpoint for their signature syrupy fluffy pancake, and then walking around McCarren Park to let our stomachs settle. After our walk we’ll visit the shops and markets in the area, checking out the local artisans and trying on a few statement pieces.
Next we will make our way to Manhattan for a fancy dress dinner (I love dressing up for a dinner) at Don Angie (in this scenario we are doing a splurge day). I’ve never been, but you CANT go wrong with pasta and fancy dress. Finally, we’d end at my apartment to hang out with my incredible roommates, make drinks and chat about everything from grief to our newest recipes we want to try (and yes, my roommates are actually incredible, we do hang out, and these have been topics of conversation).
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate shout outs to a few people!
My mother, first and foremost, for her unyielding support of me. Through all of my self doubt and fears, she has never doubted my abilities or my dreams. And in fact she has encouraged them both, consistently and across time.
My best friend Marisa, for her special brand of love and humor. She is my sister and soulmate in this world. We keep finding each other through lifetimes.
My friend Cyrus, for the world of meditation, presence and awareness he has opened up to me. My mind and mindset have been radically changed over the past few years, and with his guidance I’ve learned more about myself than I ever could’ve imagined. I know myself as a person and musician in ways I couldn’t previously have dreamed of.
For all of my friends and family who have continuously loved and supported me. Attended shows, chatted with me about life on the phone for hours. Joined me in laughter and love.
