We had the good fortune of connecting with Krystal Norman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krystal, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I was in pursuit of freedom—the freedom to live life on my own terms, to do things my way. After spending 10 years as a teacher with HISD, 16 years in education in total, I began to feel trapped and miserable. The daily grind of a lackluster lifestyle drained my passion and led me down the path to entrepreneurship. But, to be honest, becoming a business owner has always been my dream.
In the classroom, what was once my greatest joy slowly became my greatest struggle. As the school district imposed more and more constraints on how we could teach the curriculum and what resources we could use, I found myself stifled and disconnected. I no longer had the creative freedom to truly reach and inspire every student. Add to that the feeling of being undervalued and underpaid, and it became clear that I needed a change.
The more I was restricted, the clearer it became that my purpose lay outside the classroom door. Entrepreneurship became my escape—and ultimately, my opportunity to create a life that was truly mine.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Cooking has always been a passion of mine. Growing up, I was the kid in the kitchen, eager to help my grandmother and aunties prepare dinner. My grandparents hosted large holiday gatherings, and I’d always be right there, excited to contribute. My aunt even went on to open her own restaurant when I was in high school, and I worked there after school, learning the ropes of the food industry.
Cooking is in my blood—my whole family knows how to throw down in the kitchen. It’s not just a hobby; it’s a way of life. When I moved to Texas for college, I arrived in the BBQ capital of the world. It was here that my cooking skills truly evolved. The rich flavors of BBQ and Cajun cuisine pushed me to blend my roots with new culinary techniques, taking my cooking to the next level.
While I am not formally trained, my love for food and the skills I’ve honed since childhood have led me to build a successful business. Prior to pursuing my passion for cooking full-time, I was a special education teacher. My deep love for the special needs community continues to be a driving force in my life, and I’m excited to merge my two passions—cooking and teaching.
In the upcoming year, I plan to create opportunities for disabled adults by employing them in my business. I believe that adults with special needs deserve meaningful careers just like anyone else. Additionally, I want to offer jobs to second-chance young adults—non-violent offenders or those from group homes—providing them with a path to a better future.
At Supreme Eats, I aim to deliver a luxury catering experience that challenges the misconception that people with disabilities are incapable. Every catering and event planning experience I create is tailored to the unique needs and desires of my clients.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is simply to start—to take that first step, believe in yourself, and trust that everything else will fall into place. I want the world to know that it’s never too late to start over. Life is about the journey, not the destination, and we all have the power to create the life we’ve always dreamed of.
I didn’t have a road map to success like some people, and I’ve had to work hard for everything I’ve achieved. I’ve overcome countless obstacles and challenges to get to where I am today, and I know there’s still more to come. Supreme Eats is my heart and soul, dedicated to providing exceptional food, using only the best ingredients, and delivering a stellar customer experience.
People trust my brand because they know they’re getting exactly what they pay for. At Supreme Eats, we don’t just cook—we craft memorable experiences.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Monday, we would do breakfast at Snooze Eatery and do a little shopping in the Galleria Area, and then a nice lunch/dinner at Joey Uptown. On Tuesday, we would have a nice lux spa day at the Post Oak do a little walking around the Memorial Park, and have a nice dinner at Liberty Kitchen. Wednesday would be a nice day to enjoy the Museum District. Thursday we could try something new in the Heights.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I give all glory to God. He has made everything possible for me, and I trust in Him with all my heart. I also want to acknowledge my two intelligent, beautiful, and amazing daughters—they are my constant motivation and the reason I keep pushing forward every day.
A special shout-out to my incredible sisters, each of you knows exactly how much you mean to me. You are my soul tribe, and I’m beyond grateful for your love and support.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t send an extra special thank you to Kesa Allen. Without her unwavering support—both in business and in life—I wouldn’t be where I am today. Kesa, you’ve been a true blessing in my journey.
Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to my family back home in Detroit, whose love and encouragement keep me grounded.
I’d also like to express my gratitude to Black Women Invest for their guidance and support in helping me grow my business and expand my knowledge of investing. I’m excited to continue learning and growing under the mentorship of Dr. Dawniel Winningham and Schelo Collier in the coming year. I have no doubt that with their impactful leadership, I will achieve even greater things.
