We had the good fortune of connecting with Krystal Norris-Landry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krystal, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Krystalight Yoga helps the community by spreading peace, strength, and healing to underserved communities who are constantly in fight or flight mode. My goal is to disarm my community/world and show them relaxation techniques to incorporate throughout their life. These things are essential to healing holistically. With physical, mental, financial, and social disparities that exist in the Black community, a collective healing is needed. I’m here to draw people to their mat as a means to address imbalance and/or help them heal from trauma that they are conceptualized to accept as reality.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Helping others has always been my driving force behind anything that I do. With my career choice of going to school initially to become a nurse was all about wanting to help others. Although, I did not become a nurse I received my bachelors in Therapeutic Recreation. As a Recreational Therapist the aim is to cater towards hollistic health, we look at the whole person. Being introduced to that Rec Therapy helped me realize how much I could still help others even if I wasn’t a nurse. Recreational Therapist use recreation as a therapeutic tool to evaluate a person’s mental, physical, and social health. That is how I found yoga, I became certified in yoga byway of it being a requirement at a psychiatric hospital I was working at as a Rec Therapist. I did not know that becoming a yoga instructor would fuel me as much as it has. But seeing how it helps others heal has made this profession prominent to me. I want everyone to experience peace that having a fluid yoga practice can bring. It is a great skill to have when moving through life & its uncertainties.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way of my profession is to be accepting of constant change. It is the most productive and skillful way to thrive in life. Always be optimistic of what is to come and even during the storms that life may bring understand that the endurance of hardship is preparation for strength.
I want the world to know that Krystalight Yoga is a yoga company that focuses on holistic health. We serve all BACKGROUNDS, but we specialize in reaching and advocating for BIPOC communities. Krystalight Yoga is here to help you breathe, laugh, sweat, and heal.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Post in Houston is a melting pot of all different kinds of foods from various cultures. So, I’d definitely recommend stopping there. They also host popup shops often from local small businesses & there is always a wellness option for movement whether it is Yoga, Pilates, or H.I.I.T.
Also, exploring Buffalo Bayou — it has a beautiful scenic view of the downtown skyline, very romantic! You can try the bike rentals & they even have events, and tours.
Nightlife – I’d say it varies but if you’re looking for good music “Off The Record” is a vibe and it’s on Main St. downtown so you can bar hop and there are great restaurants in the area.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my community (you know who you are) if you have ever supported me in any way form or fashion this shoutout is for you! Thank you for seeing me and loving me!
