We had the good fortune of connecting with Krystle Hodge and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krystle, how do you think about risk?
I have always been a planner, an organizer and not much of a big risk taker. However, starting my own business this past year and being the first entrepreneur in my family has been one of the biggest risk I have taken to date. I am proud of the risk I am taking with business because it already has opened the doors to opportunities I could not have imagined had a sat back and played things safe. The thing I am learning about risk and putting myself more out there because it allow you to grow, become more resilient and confident in achieving future goals.
What should our readers know about your business?
SafetyKay LLC promotes safety awareness to young children in a fun and engaging way. We help decrease fatality and accident rates among children ages 5-11 years by offering engaging and interactive products that teach them critical health and safety skills. We teach children how to protect themselves and be prepared against harms they may face in their everyday life. Through these tools and knowledge, children will be self-empowered to make the right safety choices on their own.
As an experienced safety professional and the real life “Safety Kay,” I know understand what it takes to build a strong safety foundation in a person, a company, a child. As a new startup, I am focusing on continuing to build by brand thankful through a few small business programs I have been able to receive guidance resources and mentorships to set me on the right path in my entrepreneur journey.
I have enjoyed speaking and teaching safety to children in classes, at camps or community events. Whether I am talking about fire safety, home safety, stranger safety, school safety, car safety, pool safety, etc., I am happy to know the impact it is making on children’s lives and helping to child accidents. With SafetyKay, we are able to bring safety in homes through our SafetyKay child animated videos, products and services. Promoting safety is a proactive way to get the entire community involved in creating healthy environments everywhere. This is a win-win for families and educators.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The itinerary would include first grabbing brunch in Rice Village or the Heights and then checking out the Museum District near Rice University. Next is lunch at Post Houston would be a great choice because of its variety of food choices and they always have events happening. Then we would end the night with some fun at Cidercade for games and could always grab a late night snack from nearby food trucks. Other places to visit during the weekend would be shows a Millers Outdoor Theatre or downtown in the Theatre district where they are places to also eat well.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes, I want to shout out John Nicklos, who served as a mentor and coach when I participated in a small business program the first year I started my business. He offered me guidance and assistance when I worked on my first business plan and helped me practice for pitch competitions. John is an entrepreneur and business owner that been actively involved in several programs around Houston focused towards developing successful business owners. He has done a lot for the Third Ward Houston community and continues to invest his energy and time into small businesses. John is someone that saw the vision in my business and built confidence in me even when I was skeptical at first about trying to promoting my business to the public. To this day, he is always a phone call away and his mentorship has been a blessing to say the least.
