We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle & Megan Brewer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyle & Megan, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Well, there are certainly times where there is a lot more work and a lot less life! But, as we grow, we find ourselves reassessing and adjusting. On top of running our home bakery, we have two children, and it is extremely important to us that we spend quality time with them. This means completely disconnecting sometimes to just be with them. That’s why you’ll find that we are closed on Sundays and Tuesdays. On Sunday, we attend church as a family and spend the day together. Tuesdays are filled with our kids’ activities, so we are closed to be sure we can focus on them and be there for them – even if that means prepping orders for the next day while they sit next to us.
The balance between work and life is often the forefront of our minds. God and family are our number one priorities, so making sure we don’t slip into prioritizing other things in front of those can be very difficult – it’s a daily choice we have to make. The busier we get, the harder it can be, but that’s when we take a step back and make changes where needed. God would not have given us this dream if he did not want us to succeed, so we just follow where he leads, we keep our priorities in order, and He takes care of the rest!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We are Brown Butter Bakery – a cottage bakery that specializes in huge, gourmet cookies and other gourmet and fresh-baked goods! What sets us apart is our ability to bring a gourmet aspect to traditional cookies – from the size of our cookies to the uniquely delicious flavors we create, you are left wanting more. Once you’ve tried our cookies, you don’t forget us. We are lovingly often referred to as “The Cookie People!”
(Kyle) I am excited to see what new cookie flavors and what new menu items I can create. The kitchen is my playground, and I love exploring and creating.
(Megan) Seeing where our business goes and how it grows is what excites me the most! I dream big, and as God brings them to life, those dreams just get bigger and bigger! Our business has truly been a walk of faith – and always will be – and it is fun and exciting to know God has big plans for us, and He will take us to places we can’t begin to imagine.
The path to success is never an easy one, but you have to go through those trials to learn and grow. If you’re comfortable, then you’re not growing! We got here through faith, hard work, and perseverance. We still aren’t where we want to be because our dreams and goals are always growing with us.
It’s truly hard to summarize everything we have learned along the way. It seems we learn something almost every day. One huge lesson we have learned is when to say NO, when to STOP and give ourselves – and our family – a break from work. Our mentor, Chef Schonberg, has always taught us, “When you say yes to one thing, it means you’re saying no to something else.” We keep that lesson in mind at all times, and it helps us to evaluate our decisions so that we keep our priorities in line.
If there was just one thing we could share… We are just two ordinary people with a passion and a dream that we want to share with the world. We started this journey because we needed to supplement our income from our full time jobs… And now we are on a path for this to be full time for both of us! So, if you have a dream – we encourage you to chase them! The road to success is not a straight line, and it is not easy. But if you keep chasing and keep pushing, you’ll be so thankful you did!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, this is a fun question! We do have family and friends who visit often, and we love to show them around the Houston area.
One stop we prioritize during early spring is the Houston Rodeo! It is truly an experience that is quite unique for the city, and we look forward to it every year.
Because we have littles, we also look forward to spending a day at the Houston Zoo and Houston Aquarium. There are so many fun animals to see, and our kids love the attractions the aquarium offers. The dining experience at the aquarium is also fun for the family – we love to watch the fish as we dine!
I (Megan) grew up in the Midwest, so driving to Galveston for a quick beach getaway is always a favorite! Getting to hit the beach was not something I got to do regularly as a kid, and I love that it’s just a short drive away. We also love exploring The Pier and Kemah Boardwalk!
Closer to home, there are so many wonderful spots to visit. For morning coffee, we love to stop at Blue Willow Coffee in Willis or The Cowfee Bean’s coffee truck in Conroe. Both serve amazing coffees with unique flavors, and we love supporting local businesses!
For a quick trip during the day, we like to explore local parks, walk around Market Street in The Woodlands – and we may often stop for a sweet treat at Sweet Paris.
We are also huge foodies, and huge fans of great Mexican food. Our regular spots include El Bosque in Conroe and Gringos, but our most favorite is Ambriza, near The Vintage in Tomball.
On the (rare) occasion that we have a free Saturday morning, we enjoy eating brunch as a family. The house vote is always for Snooze or Black Walnut. The Black Walnut in Conroe provides a unique experience as it is located at the top floor of a small airport! We enjoy sitting on the rooftop patio and watching the small planes take off and land while we are there.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As a child, I (Kyle) was completely inspired by Alton Brown. The way he taught cooking and baking in a scientific way really sparked an interest in me – an interest that is still active in me today. Really understanding how ingredients react and interact with each other was fascinating to me. The knowledge Alton Brown provided is engraved in my memory forever.
(Megan) My dad is and always has been a large influence in my thought-process and thinking. I remember, very vividly, listening to motivational speakers constantly as kids. He truly encouraged us to find our passions – to dream big – and to chase those dreams. He also taught us that other people’s opinions of us don’t matter, and no dream is too big.
There has also been one person in particular who has been instrumental in helping our business achieve success: Chef Amanda Schonberg has been a huge influence and support system for us. Without her mentorship, we would be lost! When we started our journey, we had no idea how to reach people or actually start our business. Outside of posting in our neighborhood’s facebook groups, we didn’t have much of a game plan. She has helped us to create very clear goals for us and our business and personal lives. She encourages us, checks in regularly, and reminds us to take care of ourselves. Her love and support has shaped us, and we are forever grateful to her.
