We had the good fortune of connecting with Kynterra McQune and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kynterra, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I knew from the moment I came up with the idea of having a business that I wanted it to be different. I live in New York, and majority of the young women does the same thing; hair, lashes, and nails. Which is amazing but I wanted to put me inside of my business, and not just follow the cycle. I started with pillows, phone cases, and shirts. I didn’t see anybody making pillows or phone cases, so I took that Idea and had to question myself “who’s going to buy this?” In that moment I knew it and said “college students”. Before my website was up I sold 4 pillows and 1 phone case, and that’s when I knew that I needed to stay focus on the main idea to just put my personality and just me inside TheCrashSzn.
With the KayBinoSpeaks podcast I knew that I had to tell my story. I was always told I’m a good listener, I give good advice, and I knew that I only give good advice because I’ve went through so much. Having depression and a few other mental health problems at a young age is scary, to feel alone, that nobody is listening, or does anybody understand me. KayBinoSpeaks isn’t just for me, it’s for everybody who’s dealing with everyday life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
With having a business and podcast it wasn’t easy at all. There was times I wanted to give up because of my mental health, and I didn’t care about the sales or streams. Everything started in 2019, and 2020 I was really on “boss status”. I had dinners, photoshoots, a live show, and it was good seeing the numbers go up and my bank account. Then 2021 I got pregnant, and I was scared for personally reasons. I didn’t have the joy to make a podcast, put up a new product after my business anniversary, and I had to learn that being a mother doesn’t stop anything. I took those months of being pregnant to get it together, write down new ideas, start researching, it was like I hit the pause button. The moment after I had my son and the nurses took him to do their job, I immediately dropped my sons coloring book, announced that I’m back, and told the reason why I disappeared because my fans and followers needed to know. I want everybody to know that it’s not just a business and podcast, it’s my entire life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Showing someone a good time in New York is to give an experience. When visiting NYC going to a game is a must, the best time to come is winter time. The Barclay Center or MSG for a basketball game is a must for the excitement, in person live view of superstars, and good popcorn. Route 66 in Manhattan is the spot for drinks and food, it’s a nice vibe and it’s next to other bars.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
For TheCrashSzn my son, Kamori Saunders (hi mommy baby). I truly love my son, and even though he came into my business life years after, it’s just amazing to have an extra push to keep reaching for success. So I decided to share my business with my son, and created the “More Than Ink” coloring book.
For KayBinoSpeaks my biggest supporter and who deserves so much recognition is my distance friend Javonnie. Javonnie lives miles away, and has been my number one supporter. Having a stranger that transforms into a helping supportive friend, adds on to me having another life experience story to tell. She understands me, and I understand her, our loyalty combined no matter the miles just keeps uplifting me because if she was my only supporter, I still would have to keep pushing.
