We had the good fortune of connecting with Laina Hardges and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I believe in going for it! Who wants to look back on life wondering “what if?” I live a carefree life I made a promise to myself after leaving my hometown Detroit, Michigan and going to college out of state to always go for what I want in life. If it doesn’t work out fine but I’ll never look back wondering what if I took that leap of faith. I believe in going for whatever your heart desires and thats exactly what I did with my brand Tycoon Denim. Growing up while in middle school and high school before leggings became a wave of fashion every girl wanted to wear apple bottoms and true religion. I noticed so many girls on instagram wearing spandex and I wanted to create a statement piece denim for women and girls to feel like fashionista she is or inspire to be. While creating my brand I would always think of how good I felt when I’d go somewhere and people would compliment what I’m wearing. Denim that stands out and turns heads is what I thought of while creating Tycoon Denim.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Everyone in the world probably owns jeans or know someone who does right? I’d like to think so, there are so many brands from low end to high end. My denim pieces are selected and crafted by hand and selected with an appreciation for luxury at an affordable rate. You can pretty much walk in any store and get a classic pair of denim but it’s not easy finding, embellished, tassel 1of1 pieces. Our Statement piece denim was created with an uncompromising vision of good energy, innovative fashion mindset.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is exciting because I truly live this life! I always have friends coming in and out of town to visit & with the help of my favorite app YELP I often save and Instagram almost every place before I even get there. I’d start a week long trip with cooking at home for our weekly Taco Tuesday at home me and my friends love celebrating this like it’s a Holiday! Of course every girl loves a mani and pedi date and I’m taking my girls to the fancy nail salon that serves mimosas and has jelly pedicures, we love Gloss Nail Bar it gives luxury all day long they even have Valet parking! Yes thats so “extra” or what I like to call “Doing the Most” but when your bestie come in town lets roll out the red carpet. Our weekend plans would definitely involve James Harden new restaurant/hookah lounge Thirteen, the vibes are always amazing and the food is amazing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe recognition to what I like to call “My Village” my mom, friends and Houston family. Moving to Houston just 5 years ago I didn’t have the support of family and friends that i’ve known for years. I met friends that became family and college friends that became sisters and supporters. I know whatever I decide to do my village will have my back and support if thats setting up, coming to events, buying supplies, reposting and sharing my business the list goes on. I’m so grateful for friends that’ve become family its truly a blessing!
